WEC lightweight title contender Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (9-0 MMA, 2-0 WEC) stopped by Pro MMA Radio on Monday night to talk to Larry Pepe about his teammates, his training camp, and most importantly his upcoming title bout with champion Jamie Varner (15-2 MMA, 3-0 WEC).

Here are some highlights of their discussion:

Cerrone said that the fight with Rob McCullough was a fight for him. He believes he was the one who dictated the pace and it went the distance because that is something that he wanted. It also seemed a little awkward to most that the fight between McCullough and Cerrone was on the preliminary card instead of the main card. Cerrone was alright with it but believes he must have done something to make Zuffa mad.

He believes that McCullough was in the best shape when he fought him back in November. Varner on the contrary, believed that McCullough was never the same after he knocked him out in their title match last February. Cerrone believes the only reason that happened was because Varner wore McCullough down with all his take down attempts because throughout that fight he wanted nothing to do with standing and trading.

Varner was on the show previous Cerrone and was not happy to hear about some of the pre-fight smack talk going on. Cerrone had stated he believes Varner can be broken if pushed and Varner was not happy upon hearing this to say the least. After listening to Varner’s response Cerrone had quite a few laughs, “Ya whatever man thats funny, whatever man talk is cheap so bring it on,” Cerrone said.

When asked how Cerrone believed their fight was going to go he said he believed it wouldn’t go past the second round, “I’m gunna submit his little ass, (laughs) and I hope he’s listening too.”

Cerrone continued to talk about how he has been training with all the guys at Greg Jackson’s camp up in Canada. These are some of mixed martial arts’ finest such as Keith Jardine, Rashad Evans, and the UFC’s Welterweight Champion George St.Pierre.

Cerrone had hoped he and good friend Leonard Garcia would both be fighting for titles on the same card, but nonetheless is very happy they are both getting their shot.

With emotions at an all time high and the WEC Lightweight Title on the line, the fight between McCullough and Cerrone has all the makings of fight of the year this Sunday at WEC 38 in San Diego, California.
