A new year means the next round of action from the ADCC. The First World BJJ Pro 2009 – Abu Dhabi is slated for May 1st and 2nd.  2009 marks the 9th edition of the ADCC’s.

Trials for the event will be taking place in mid January for the United States hopefuls, with events on both the east and west coast. Trials in Europe as well as Brazil will also be in January to decide who will be invited to compete in the ADCC’s.

The first ADCC took place in 1998 with humble beginnings and a limited amount of “submission fighters” from all over the world.  Word of mouth quickly spread as fighters returned home and told others about the high standard that was set, the equality of rules, and for the huge purses being paid to the winners.

The best grapplers in the world made their way to the UAE to compete in the following years and the ADCC’s have become the biggest event on the planet for grappling.  The list of big names who have been champions or top competitors include Robert Drysdale, Jeff Monson, Demien Maia, Fabricio Werdum, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Felicia Oh, Tara LaRosa, Kyra Gracie, Royler Gracie, Mark Kerr, Matt Hughes, Ricardo Arona, Tito Ortiz, Rodrigo “Minotauro”, Dean Lister, Ricco Rodrigues, Matt Lindland, Tom Erickson, and Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, just to name a few.
