Carlos “The Ronin” Newton will return to action against fellow Canadian Nabil “The Thrill” Khatib at Warrior 1 MMA’s inaugural show on March 28th 2009. The bout will be Newton’s first appearance in Canada since making his pro debut 13 years ago at Extreme Fighting 2.

Newton (13-13) commented on his return to the fight scene. “I have been away from MMA for some time now and I couldn’t be more excited to be back. It only seems right to make my return in my home country and with a great organization like Warrior One.”

“The Ronin”, a former UFC Welterweight Champion, appears to be at a crossroad in his career. He has dropped six of his last seven bouts and his last meaningful win came against Renzo Gracie at PRIDE Bushido-1. However, at only 32 years old, Newton still has the desire to compete.

Nabil Khatib (8-4) could also use the victory after losing his last two bouts. The Ottawa resident has faced UFC veterans Gideon Ray and Solomon Hutcherson in his career. He last appeared at RAW Combat-Redemption in October, giving up a unanimous decision to Ryan Ford.

Lightweights Mark “Boots” Holst (4-0) and Martin “The Hammer” Grandmont (7-4) will also compete on the card.
