Huerta inks new deal with UFC

Roger Huerta and the UFC appear to be on good terms yet again. According to MMAweekly.com, “El Matador” signed a new five fight deal with the UFC Monday night and sources close to Huerta today confirmed the news.

Huerta had positioned himself as one of the UFC’s hottest prospects in 2007. Fighting five times last year for the promotion, the Minnesota resident found himself on the cover of Sports Illustrated and went undefeated in the Octagon.

He had his win streak snapped by Kenny Florian at UFC 87 in August, his only appearance in the UFC this year. Prior to UFC 87 Huerta spoke out against the UFC about their business practices in a Fight! magazine article.

Georges St. Pierre talks Fitch battle & picks winner of Hughes vs. Serra

Georges St. Pierre talked about his fight with Jon Fitch at UFC 87 with Toronto Sports Radio a few days ago. GSP compared Fitch to “The Terminator” and said it was “very discouraging” because he could not finish him. At one point GSP said he was praying while inside the cage because Fitch, the beast, would not go down. GSP decided to go for the knockout instead of submission because so many have tried in vain to submit Fitch.

GSP is headed to Brazil to vacation and to do some BJJ training.

It seems Matt Hughes left his seat at UFC 87 during the GSP vs. Fitch fight and exited the arena because “it was a boring fight and St. Pierre wasn’t showing anything.” Wow. Does anyone believe for a second that is the real reason, if Hughes did indeed get up and walk out? Rather, one might be inclined to believe that the former welterweight champ was turning a bright shade of green and had to flee the scene before anyone noticed.

Dana White’s Final UFC 87 Video Blog

Dana White took us on an unprecedented journey with him starting at the beginning of last week all the way through UFC 87 and beyond.  He did a video blog each day highlighting his activities leading up to UFC 87.  This is the final blog of the series and it was filmed the day of the fights in Minneapolis and takes us along as Dana gets ready in his hotel room to go to the fights, then to the fights, the press conference afterward and then finally back to Dana’s hotel room as the day’s festivities come to a close.

It’s a very personal look into the life of the promoter and reminds me of the stories I’ve heard of what the original concept for “The Ultimate Fighter” had been.  White promises that his video blogs will continue for each UFC hereafter so until next time, here’s the man himself, Mr. White:

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – UFC 87 was a huge success on many levels from ticket sales to the fights themselves. The Target Center in Minneapolis, where the event was held, set a new record gate of $2.2 million dollars with 15,082 attendees.

Dana said, “Georges St. Pierre put on an amazing performance against a guy (Jon Fitch) who would not quit…he took him down at will…GSP looked unstoppable.

And when your boss says this about you, it’s a damn good day: “When Brock said he wanted to fight in the UFC, I told him this isn’t the place to learn how to fight…but he said he wanted to test himself against the best…Heath Herring has a ton of experience, big fights with some of the best fighters in the world…Brock Lesnar looked unbelievable tonight. I was blown away with how well he looked.”

According to Dana, Minneapolis is the best kept secret in America and maybe the world. That’s interesting…I thought that was Lyoto.

Do you see the fight between B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre being the next fight for them both? “Definitely,” said White.

Jason MacDonald vs. Demian Maia (middleweight)

Rd.1 – They both come out trading punches. Maia pulls guard. Maia looking for a triangle. Rogan has already called it over. MacDonald is out of the triangle and takes Maia’s back with hooks in. Maia escapes a rear naked choke attempt. Back in Maia’s full guard. Shoulder strikes by MacDonald. MacDonald postures up and lands some shots. MacDonald has a deep guilatine. Maia is bleeding. Maia escapes and takes MacDonald’s back with rear naked choke in. Wow. MacDonald survived! Amazing! Amazing!
Rd.2 – Maia catches MacDonald with a left. Clinched up. Maia throws some knees then takes MacDonald down. Maia is on top and in full mount. Elbows by Maia. Big punches by Maia. Big elbows. Maia still with the ground and pound. Still in full mount for over a minute. MacDonald hanging on from the bottom. MacDonald pops out but Maia has his arm; he’s out. MacDonald on top now in half guard looking to pass as the bell sounds.
Rd.3 – MacDonald lands a punch and Maia gets the takedown. MacDonald reverses and gets on top. MacDonald’s corner told him not to play this ground game with Maia but he still is. Maia sinks in the choke and MacDonald taps, too exhausted to defend I imagine.

Countdown To UFC 87 Was Ridiculous

by:  Kelvin Hunt

Ridiculously good that is and clearly the UFC has the right idea with this show in creating new stars.  There were three main objectives with the hour long show.

  1. Paint Jon Fitch as a worthy challenger, and provide some detailed history about his upbringing
  2. Same process for Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian
  3. Paint Brock Lesnar as a real fighter instead of hyping up his WWE days

While the GSP/Fitch fight is a given for the hardcore fans, most casual fans still do not know who Fitch is.  I thought the show did a great job of letting the casual fan know just exactly who Jon Fitch is and where he came from.  While GSP is bordering on superstar status, I think they showed just enough of him to let people know who Fitch is fighting.  Great job in realizing that Fitch needs more exposure instead of giving a lot of time to GSP.

Analyzing GSP/Fitch

By Kelvin Hunt

Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch is a dream fight, a fight in which you have a legitimate number one contender against the champion.  Both fighters have beaten some of the best in the world in the Welterweight Division.  Both fighters are incredibly well rounded in every aspect of the game.  Let’s take a closer look at how each fighter can win this fight.

Keys To Victory:

  • GSP-Utilize striking, keep it standing or take Fitch down and control him…avoid Fitch’s takedowns.
  • Fitch-Pressure, Pressure, Pressure, and get takedown if/when it presents itself…win scrambles
