Is undefeated 22 year-old Chad Corvin the next great American heavyweight?

Chad Corvin
Chad Corvin

Amidst great fanfare and international intrigue, South African heavyweight champion, Rico “The White Lion” Hattingh, entered the main event of the XFC “Clash of the Continents” supercard on December 5, 2008 with an 11-1 pro record, ten gold medals won from international wrestling competitions, a submission victory over UFC veteran Trevor Prangley, and universal recognition as the top heavyweight in all of Africa.

The Mixed Martial Arts media on both continents eagerly awaited Hattingh’s XFC debut against the lesser-known 22-year-old American heavyweight, Chad Corvin. Rico Hattingh left the main event on a stretcher – with his nose shattered in four different locations – after being knocked out cold in 19 seconds. But Hattingh shouldn’t feel too disheartened: None of Corvin’s previous opponents have survived the first round either.

Is the WEC preparing to add female weight classes?

It appears that WEC Welterweight Champion, Carlos Condit, could be getting a transfer to the UFC. Parent company, Zuffa, owns both promotions.

The decision to move Condit to the UFC comes on the heels of his scheduled opponent for WEC 39 set for March 1, Brock Larson, having to pull out of the fight due to injury. Condit’s first UFC appearance could be a SPIKE TV televised main event versus Martin Kampmann at UFC Fight Night 18 in Nashville, TN.

The same report indicates that the WEC will most likely go ahead and disband their entire welterweight division which would make sense if they are moving the champion to a different organization. Since Zuffa owns both promotions, UFC and WEC, it appears they are wanting to cut out all coinciding weight classes. The WEC already shut down their light heavyweight and middleweight classes and transferred most of their top fighters from those divisions to the UFC, so it appears the move with Condit fits right into the master plan.

Also on the card was Lightweight Champion, Warren “Baby Dynamite” Stewart (3-8) taking on Vince Libardi (7-4). Libardi won by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 30-27.

PRO MMA Gym Spotlight: Guardian MMA Pt. 1

One of PRO MMA’s missions is to take the reader behind the scenes to get a better look at what has made MMA into the fastest growing sport in the world. Fans often get just a glimpse behind the scenes of an MMA fight with shows like the UFC Countdown series, The Ultimate Fighter series, and the Tapout reality shows.

We read or hear about the training camps and gym affiliations that guys are associated with, and learn that there are many people involved in preparing these athletes to do battle.  An MMA fighter relies on coaches, trainers, managers, agents, training partners, and promoters but the base of operations is a home gym.

Many guys cross train at multiple gyms, but their home gym is often where it all started.  Whether it is a tiny MMA gym in a small town in Anywhere USA, or a large franchise of gyms like Xtreme Couture, the gym is like a second home to many fighters both amateur and professional.

Dan Barrera makes MMA return at XFC 7 in Knoxville, TN

We haven’t heard much from Daniel Barrera since his stint on The Ultimate Fighter 6. Like Chris Lytle, Barrera is a firefighter but he is also an instructor at SSF Submission Academy in Clarksville, TN.

Barrera lost to Ben Saunders at the Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale by decision in December of ’07. That was his first professional MMA fight. Since then, Barrera has reeled off two straight victories, the most recent was on October 3, 2008 at Showcase of Strength in Shepardsville, KY.

Barrera will be stepping back into the cage on February 20th in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he will face Robert “Iron Man” Thompson at Xtreme Fighting Championship’s XFC 7: RETRIBUTION. With the UFC scheduled to land in Nashville just two months later, MMA promotions are taking full advantage of the state’s legalization of the sport, which came in 2008.
