ProMMA.info Knockout of 2009: Fedor over Arlovski

All MMA fans know that Fedor Emelianeko is a great fighter. Deep down even the most vocal detractors realize that he can do things in the ring or cage that makes fans stand and applaud. In 2009, he gave us a few of those moments. One such moment earned him the ProMMA.info knockout of 2009 award.

During the days leading up to Affliction’s second show so much of the talk was about Andre Arlovski’s improved boxing. In preparation for the fight, the former UFC champion trained with famed coach Freddie Roach. A lot of people thought that this would propel Arlovski to a win over the WAMMA champion, but after about three minutes of fighting he was face down on the canvass.

Arlovski, who had been backing the champ up with straight punches, attempted a flying knee. Emelianenko timed an overhand right perfectly and dropped his opponent. Arlovski was out before he hit the ground. He laid motionless, face down, for several moments before he woke up.

ProMMA.info “UFC Fight Night 20” staff picks

“UFC Fight Night 20” takes place Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. The event will air live on Spike TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

Headlining the card we have Gray “The Bully” Maynard taking on TUF 5 winner Nate Diaz. Diaz needs to keep putting together some wins, and a victory over top ten ranked Maynard would definitely be a nice feather in his cap as well as boosting his stock considerably in the lightweight division.

Diaz will have his hands full against Maynard who is undefeated and is one of the top contenders in line for a shot at B.J. Penn’s lightweight title. Here are our predictions for “UFC Fight Night 20”:

WEC 46 spotlight: Deividas Taurosevicius – ProMMA.info exclusive interview

Deividas Taurosevicius, a former pro Rugby player from Lithuania, originally moved to the United States to play for the Professional Rugby League. The league never really got off the ground in America, but Deividas decided he wanted to stay.

It was here he discovered his passion for MMA. The same drive that had made him a top athlete in Rugby (He was awarded Best Player in Lithuania in 1999), he turned toward MMA. Having turned pro in 2002, Deividas now owns his own gym, and holds a record of 11-3, with wins over such fighters as Dan Lauzon, Bart Palaszewski, and Javier Vasquez, to name a few.

ProMMA.info Disappointment of 2009: Josh Barnett

Classic heavyweight fights are a rarity in MMA. There has always been a dearth of talent. Competition between promotions always ends up fracturing the already weak weight class. So, when Affliction announced Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett, MMA fans thought they were in line for something special.

In the end, the fight never actually happened and Affliction ended up closing up shop and running back to Mr. White. For this failure, Barnett earns the ProMMA.info award for 2009’s biggest disappointment.

Toward the end of his Pride FC tenure, Fedor Emelianenko started taking on fighters that were not bona fide challengers. After’s Pride’s demise this trend continued.

Rashad Evans (No. 4 LHW) vs. Thiago Silva (No. 8 LHW)

BRIAN FURBY: In spite of the fact I wish that one of the other 12 original main event match-ups were still going down, I’m looking forward to this fight. Both guys are quick strikers with good power and have solid all-around games. I think Silva packs more power, but I do think Rashad has a slight edge on speed and technicality while also being more elusive. I don’t think the fight is likely to hit the ground – both guys want an impressive victory to get another shot at Machida, and Rashad also has the added factor of still wanting a piece of Rampage. I think the first round will see a lot of range-testing and maybe some quick flurries where one or both guys look in danger, but in the end, I see Rashad finishing it about halfway through the second. Rashad by TKO in Round 2.

ProMMA.info 2009 end of year fighter rankings

I call this "Psychedelic Fedor" because he is on another plane of being. Also, if I had one wish it would be to go to Fedor's birthday party and MC Hammer would sing the classics while Fedor does the running man.

Welcome to the new (not so much improved, really, because, well… they ARE new) ProMMA.info fighter rankings.  These rankings are compiled by me, Mike Menninger, MMA genius, card-carrying member of the ANA (Anti-Nuthugger Alliance), defender of horrendous sweaters worn by athletes of whom I am afraid, and co-host of The Cageside Beat radio show.  (Please note, ProMMA.info can only confirm or deny the last one, which it confirms, but probably would rather deny.)

These rankings aren’t scientific, exactly.  Who needs hard data when totally arbitrary information can be passed off as fact anyway?  Am I right?  Instead, fighters are ranked based on my review of various computer rankings across the interwebs, recent fighter activity, the douchey-ness of fighters’ nicknames, and most importantly, my own bias.  No fighter is ranked in more than one division.  I’ll also be adding comments as I see fit.

Remember kids, these rankings are specifically designed as a personal affront to you, each and every reader of ProMMA.info.  That’s right.  With each new weight class, imagine me giving you the double finger, straight Stockton, Cali-style, homie.
