PRO MMA Training Camp feature: Eric Lawson

In one of his last hard training sessions leading up to his bout this Saturday, PRO MMA (promma.info) got a peek at one of Eric Lawson’s sparring sessions at Combat Fitness in Concord, California. The Strikeforce middleweight traded leather with champion Muay-Thai practitioner Caley Scott and UFC veteran Gil Castillo.

Lawson (8-2) had been set to take on American Kickboxing Academy’s Richard Montoya, however, Montoya was forced to back out due to injury. Derrick Thornton had been slated to take Montoya’s place but Waylon Kennell (4-1) will go toe-to-toe with Lawson on April 11th at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz.

Year one with Ryan Bastianelli: PRO MMA exclusive

On an overcast morning in Concord, California, Ryan Bastianelli paces back and forth trying to warm up in the chilly December weather. He stops for a minute to take a sip from his protein shake while standing out in front of Combat Fitness.

“Relentless” Ryan has honed his craft at the northern California gym, helping him break into the world of professional MMA in 2008.

The 135 pounder hopes the impending new year will present challenging opportunities in his young career. While ’08 marked his first year as a professional, ’09 could be the year in which the Oklahoma native starts to make a name for himself in the Bantamweight division.

Strikeforce weigh-ins: news and notes

Promma.info’s Eddie Constantine and Matt De La Rosa were on hand at the The Hotel DeAnza to witness the Strikeforce:Destruction weigh-ins Thursday night.

The only thing colder then the San Jose weather was Joe Riggs’s attitude. Riggs’s was visibly showing the affects of a twenty plus pound weight cut and became frustrated with the athletic commission’s handling of the scale, forcing Rigg’s to strip down prior to stepping on the scale.

Another fighter noticeably shaken from cutting weight was middleweight Terry Martin. Martin was seen lying on the floor before weighing in. Immediately after he stepped off the scale Martin rushed out of the room to begin replenishing himself for tomorrow’s co-main event.
