Remembering “Fast” Eddie Constantine – photo gallery included

On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, I got a call from Pro MMA Now VP Denny Hodge that Eddie Constantine had died. I thought it was some cruel joke. “Fuck you man,” is I believe what I told him. “Don’t even say that shit,” I said. Denny said he would not joke about such a thing, … Read more

ProMMA.info’s “Strikeforce: Evolution” staff picks

“Strikeforce: Evolution” takes place tonight, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The main televised portion of this card is stacked with stars. It is a card that any true MMA fan should be thrilled with.

It was even better until Robbie Lawler got pulled off, but even still, it is more than solid. I wish it were five fights on the Showtime card instead of just four but, whaddaya gonna do? At least it’s free, right?

Well, the ProMMA.info staff put our heads together once again to give our picks on who we think will win and why. We’re starting to develop some rivalries here, and from what I hear 2010 is gonna get downright competitive.

The one known as Richard Mann has called out Cageside Beat host Brian Furby and said, “Furby is going down this time.” As for Furby, he has remained quiet so far, and has preferred to let his intricate knowledge of the sport do his talking up to this point. He went a perfect 5-0 at UFC 107, and will be looking for a repeat performance. The Info co-host “Fast Eddie” has been sidelined for awhile but will be looking to bounce back with some correct picks of his own this time. Without further ado, let’s get it on fellers!

MMA’s Biggest Loser – weeks 3-4 recap with Fast Eddie

Class is in session at the Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
Class is in session at the Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

First let me say it is nice to be back. We are currently in the middle of week five right now and I am feeling great. Much, much better than week three, that is for sure. Week three started with extreme pain and ended with french fries and an after party! I know, I know not a recipe for success. Let me explain.

As everyone knows by now, I have a few bulging discs in my back along with some facet bones issues. As such, the hard work that I put into weeks one and two caught up to me.

To say I went into physical shock would sum it up nicely. My back flared up severely in the week leading up to the Strikeforce Challengers event in Fresno, Calif. As my trainers Dave and Anthony informed me, it is very important to listen to my body and act accordingly. With that in mind, I decided to maintain my diet and allow the pain and swelling in my lower back to subside.

ProMMA.info’s UFC 105 staff picks

A portion of the ProMMA.info staff has come together again to give their predictions for this weekend’s UFC 105 fight card which takes place in Manchester, England, on Nov. 7. The card is headlined by a light heavyweight match-up between UFC legend Randy “The Natural” Couture making his return to 205 pounds, and Brandon “The Truth” Vera, who is getting a shot at greatness.

One of the most anticipated bouts on the card is the middleweight match-up between the U.K.’s own Michael Bisping and Canadian Denis Kang. Bisping will attempt to rebound after his devastating knockout loss to Dan Henderson, and Kang, who is now 1-1 in the UFC, is in a position where he needs to keep putting together the victories.

Also on the UFC 105 main card, which will air on Spike TV, is a lightweight match-up between Ross Pearson and Aaron Riley, a welterweight bout between James Wilks vs. Matt Brown, and a welterweight showdown between dangerous strikers Dan Hardy and Mike Swick. Here are our oh so professional predictions. Let us know who is on spot, who is off their rocker, and your own opinions:

Strikeforce compensates both Davis and Miller for cancelled fight

Deray Davis and Mark Miller weighed in for their Nov. 7 Strikeforce fight, however, due to time constraints, the fight did not happen.
Deray Davis and Mark Miller weighed in for their Nov. 7 Strikeforce fight, however, due to time constraints, the fight did not happen.

Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz confirmed with ProMMA.info today, that both Mark Miller and Deray Davis not only received their show money, but each fighter was also given their win bonuses.

The decision was made once a subsequent fight could not be secured for each fighter on a local promotion’s upcoming event. This was the honorable thing to do for the San Jose based promotion and will go a long way in building integrity for the organization.

The welterweight fight between Miller and Davis was originally slated to be on the undercard of the Nov. 7 Fedor-Rogers event that took place in Hoffman Estates, Ill. and aired live on CBS.

Strikeforce Challengers proves successful for local fighters

The fourth edition of the Strikeforce Challengers series took place Friday night, Nov. 6, in Fresno, Calif. The local MMA scene was represented well with a handful of fighters from the Fresno area on both the under card and main card. Fresno legend and staph infection survivor Cole Escovedo was first up.

Escovedo’s near death experience from a misdiagnosed illness is well documented. Cole came out with fire in his eyes and look possessed from the opening bell. His first offensive attempt came in the form of a flying submission attempt.

Although unsuccessful, he followed that up with an enormous high kick that found the mark. Escovedo followed his stunned opponent to the mat instantly. The referee was right on top of the action but hesitated in stopping the fight, allowing “The Apache Kid” to land several unanswered and unnecessary shots.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO vs. BRETT ROGERS

RICHARD MANN: I was thinking about taking Brett Rogers, but only because I did not want Ken Pavia to feel all alone. Rogers might impress a few people, but he is going to be submitted. The argument that no one has been able to take Rogers to the ground is mute. Fedor is Fedor for a reason, and he is going to win this one by submission.
