Bob Shamrock dies at 68 – Father to Ken & Frank Shamrock

Bob and Ken Shamrock

January 14th, 2010 – Bob Shamrock, the father of legendary MMA fighters Ken Shamrock and younger brother Frank Shamrock passed away today Thursday, Jan 14th at 2pm at the home of his eldest son Ken – surrounded by friends and family.  Ken Shamrock and his wife Tonya brought Bob to their home on Saturday after a long term battle with different health complications due to Diabetes – Bob was 68 years old.

Bob is best known for opening up his home in Susanville, CA to literally hundreds of defiant and hardcore kids.   Ken Shamrock (then Ken Wayne Nance) was 13 years old when he arrived at the Shamrock Boys Home in Susanville, CA – Ken at the time was in trouble with the law for strong armed robbery among other things.

“I just watched Ken’s eyes when he first arrived, because this was my home. It wasn’t some business place where I came on from 8 til 5 – it was my home, and the house was really big, we ate well, we had a swimming pool, and all those kinds of things. It was a lot different than the other group homes he had been in.” Bob Shamrock

The sport of professional mixed martial arts lost another one of its own this past Friday when 32-year-old Ross “The Grizzly” Clifton passed away from an apparent heart attack. His wife had gone to bed and left him watching TV in the recliner Thursday evening at their home in Rancho Cordova, Calif., and when she woke up on the morning of Sept. 4, 2009, Clifton was deceased.

Clifton’s former trainer, UFC veteran Cal Worsham told MMAWeekly, “He was a jovial teddy bear inside of a grizzly’s body. He was just so funny and such a character in the way you’d never expect from a giant of a man like that. He’s absolutely going to be missed.”

Historic MMA Fights – Evan Tanner vs. Heath Herring

In honor of Evan Tanner, this week’s edition of Historic MMA Fights is a classic bout Tanner had with Heath Herring.  It was only Herring’s second pro mma fight.  You can really understand maybe one of the reasons Herring got the nickname “Crazy Horse” by watching this.  His style was wild and flamboyant.  The fight was held in Texas at Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation 7 on October 18th, 1997.  It was Evan Tanner’s fourth professional mma fight.

It is significant because Tanner beat Herring on this night. However, it was Herring who three fights later, in Tanner’s seventh professional fight and his third of the evening, would serve him his first professional loss. Tanner fought seven times the year of this match, 1997 and he fought ten times the next year. Evan Tanner had seventeen professional fights before ever entering the UFC Octagon to become one of the most beloved and respected combat athletes of our time.
