Contrary to recent reports, Cro Cop not retiring…yet

Mirko is not yet ready to hang it up.

“Cro Cop calls it quits” is just one of the many headlines today on multiple MMA “news” sites that claim the Croatian has retired from the UFC and MMA. It seems, however, that these reports are a bit hasty, and that Mirko is not hanging it up just yet.

The 35-year-old Croatian fighter had this to say, to Index.hr,

“Although it would be for the best to stay out, I would like to do two more contracted fights with the UFC and then end my career. Simply, fights and training are in my blood, I still haven’t made my final decision, it can happen that I finish everything day after tomorrow, but I would like to in fact still do it. After the Dos Santos defeat I was hot and the statements were not founded. Things are not all that black.”

Cro Cop comments on his return to the UFC

Mirko Cro Cop will face Junior dos Santos at UFC 103 on Sept. 19, 2009 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed during a Q & A session at the UFC Fan Expo that the Croatian signed a three-fight contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Fertitta flew to Croatia to try and patch things up with Cro Cop who had allegedly reneged on an agreement with the UFC and had chosen instead to fight for the Japanese DREAM organization.

Cro Cop spoke recently about his decision to stay with the UFC, “I am pleased to return to the UFC, the only global MMA organization. Unfortunately, all the other organizations are lagging behind the UFC at the moment.”

Cro Cop’s UFC return is short lived

Many long time MMA fans were happy to see Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic make his Octagon return at UFC 99 in Germany on Saturday and were cheering as he won a TKO over England’s Mostapha Al-Turk. Fans dared to believe the Cro Cop of old had returned and could make a run at the UFC title which is what he claimed he wanted to do.

However, any hopes of ever seeing Cro Cop in the UFC again have just vanished forever. According to a report from Kevin Iole at Yahoo Sports, Cro Cop, shortly after defeating Al-Turk, informed UFC President Dana White he had signed a three-fight deal with the Japan-based MMA promotion DREAM. This was a small detail he just happen to leave out when negotiating his one fight deal for UFC 99.

UFC officially announces Cro Cop vs. Al-Turk for Germany

The UFC made the official announcement today on their website that Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic will return to the Octagon against England’s Mostapha Al-Turk on the main card of “UFC 99: The Comeback” in Cologne, Germany on June 13th.
