PRO MMA exclusive – UFC’s Jake O’Brien: Overcoming adversity and looking to be a force at 205

Jake O’Brien is a UFC veteran that is 11-2 overall and 4-2 in the Octagon. He has been the underdog on a number of occasions, including the first time he stood face to face with Pride and UFC veteran Heath Herring (28-14 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at UFN 8. Jake surprised most fans, but not himself when he earned a unanimous decision victory against the heavyweight contender.

Jake’s path would not get any easier as he next faced former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (14-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) at UFC 82 after coming back from a serious neck injury that sidelined him for over a year. O’Brien would go on to lose the fight versus Arlovski and faced additional insult to injury by being released from the UFC.

It’s house cleaning time again for UFC

Clementi gets 'no love' from UFC

It is house cleaning time again for the world’s leading mixed martial arts promotion. It has been reported that the UFC has released veteran Rich Clementi (32-14-1) and ATT fighter, Luigi Fioravanti (14-5) from their contracts. The news comes just days after both fighters were defeated on the UFC Fight Night 17 card.

Clementi gave up a first round submission loss to Gleison Tibau and Fioravanti lost by TKO, also in round one, to Anthony Johnson. The loss was Clementi’s second in a row, having lost to Gray Maynard back at UFC 90 in the fall. However, before the two consecutive defeats, The Ultimate Fighter 4 cast member had won five straight fights including four in the UFC.

Jon Fitch & Christian Wellisch cut from UFC

Former welterweight number one contender, Jon Fitch has been released from his contract with the UFC along with heavyweight Christian Wellisch.

UFC President Dana White let it be known he no longer wants to work with fighters from the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose or those represented by DeWayne Zinkin and “Crazy” Bob Cook.

What is White upset about and why would Fitch and Wellisch be released from their contracts? According to sources, it stems from a merchandising deal and their refusual of signing over their likeness for the organization’s video game for life.

Popular Ultimate Fighter veteran, Josh Koscheck and undefeated heavyweight standout Cain Velasquez also seem to be in danger.  Fortunately for Koscheck he is headlining the UFC’s next main event on the December 10 Fight for the Troops card.  Otherwise he may have already been forced to walk the plank.
