Barnett’s camp responds to positive steroid test and ‘Trilogy’ cancellation

Josh Barnett’s manager, Shannon Hooper of Excel Sports Management, has released a statement regarding Barnett’s positive steroid test result as administered by the California State Athletic Commission.

Although Barnett denies intentionally using any banned substance, the positive steroid test has caused him to be pulled from a scheduled Aug. 1 main event fight against Fedor Emelianenko at “Affliction: Trilogy” in Anaheim, Calif.

Paul “Semtex” Daley lands four-fight UFC deal (updated)

Former Cage Rage Welterweight Champion Paul “Semtex” Daley (21-8-2) has signed a four-fight deal with the UFC according to Fighters Only.

Daley is an impressive striker with 16 of his 21 wins coming by way of (T)KO. His most recent fight was back in April where he scored a first round TKO over Junior Barata (5-2-1). Daley was originally scheduled to fight on the Aug. 1 “Affliction: Trilogy” card against Jay Hieron.

“Semtex” is a native of Nottingham, England, and although he would fit in perfectly on the UFC’s future U.K. cards, it is believed the UFC wants to use him on their U.S. cards as well.

Fedor Emelianenko addresses the media for first time since “Trilogy” cancellation

Anaheim, Calif. — In front of many leading members of the MMA media, former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko addressed the public Wednesday for the first time since Affliction announced last week that it was canceling its planned “Trilogy” pay-per-view event.

M-1 U.S.A. Vice President Jerry Millen opened the press conference held at the International Room inside the DoubleTree Hotel & Resort in Anaheim by revealing that Emelianenko will adorn the cover of an upcoming video game release in 2010.

“EA Sports will announce that (M-1 Global’s) Fedor Emelianenko will headline the EA Sports mixed martial arts fighter game due October next year, also along with (M-1 fighter) Gegard Mousasi and Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral,” Millen announced.

Rothwell vs. Gormley moved to UFC

A heavyweight bout between Ben Rothwell and Chase Gormley, which had originally been slated for “Affliction: Trilogy” on Aug. 1, has been moved to UFC 104 set for Oct. 24 according to a new report on Sherdog.com.

Although Rothwell has been fighting professionally since 2001 and has an impressive record of 30-6, this will be his first time inside the Octagon. It will also mark Gormley’s UFC debut, who boasts an undefeated record of 6-0.

“Affliction: Trilogy” was cancelled after Josh Barnett, who was to take on Fedor Emelianenko in the main event, tested positive for steroids. First, Barnett was pulled from the card, then the entire card was shut down, and in the end, the entire Affliction MMA promotion closed its doors.

Fedor Emelianenko to address the media during Wednesday press conference in Anaheim

Anaheim, Calif. – Ever since Affliction announced late last week that its “Trilogy” event scheduled for Aug. 1 had been canceled, the combat sports world collectively has waited for an official response from former PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.

On Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT inside the DoubleTree Hotel in Anaheim, Calif., Emelianenko will address the media for the first time since last week’s sudden cancellation. During the press conference, Emelianenko will discuss the ramifications of the cancellation, comment on his future in the fight game, and respond to questions from members of the media.

Renato “Babalu” Sobral to put Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title on the line against Gegard Mousasi on August 15

Gegard Mousasi was originally scheduled to fight Renato “Babalu” Sobral as part of the now defunct “Affliction: Trilogy” event on Aug. 1. Due to the cancellation of the card and the subsequent shutdown of Affliction’s MMA promotional division, the bout has been moved to Strikeforce, where Sobral in fact holds the light heavyweight title. PRO MMA (promma.info) received the following press release regarding the news:

NEW YORK (July 27, 2009)–The highly-anticipated showdown between Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) and Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1), which was suddenly cancelled by its original promoter last week, has been revitalized and will be contested with Sobral’s STRIKEFORCE World Light Heavyweight (205 pounds) Championship on the line at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, August 15.
