Dana White headed to Montreal to try and save UFC 97

PRO MMA (promma.info) has learned that the Quebec Athletic Commission has a meeting planned next week with Dana White, in which the UFC President wiill try and save UFC 97. Sources close to the situation indicate both parties would like to try and resolve the issue with an open mind.

We reported to you on Thursday that the athletic commission had intentions to cancel UFC 97 if the UFC did not adapt its regulations to those of Quebec. According to the current rules of the Quebec Athletic Commission a fighter can not strike their opponent with knees or elbows.

In recent years, there have been MMA events held in Quebec, including the now defunct TKO organization that used knees and elbows. So why were these rules overlooked? From what we could gather, it appears the acting director of combat sports for the commission, Mario Latraverse, allowed these MMA-rules events to take place. Since Latraverse’s resignation last October, no event that uses knees and elbows has been allowed under the orders of the new director, Richard Renaud.

Anderson Silva is scheduled to defend his UFC Middleweight Title against Thales Leites at UFC 97 on April 17, in Montreal, Canada. Stay tuned to PRO MMA (promma.info) for updates on this developing story.
