Full fight card confirmed for UFC 97: REDEMPTION

The UFC announced the remainder of the UFC 97: REDEMPTION card today. The already sold out event, set for April 18th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, will be headlined by UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites and Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell vs. Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua. The UFC has also made official ten more fights to round off the card.

The headline fights promise to be exciting and may end quickly. Anderson Silva, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, looks to continue his winning ways against world-class grappler, Thales Leites. If Leites can’t get this fight to the ground quickly, it may be a short night against such a top notch striker as Anderson Silva.

Dana White gives Iceman an ultimatum

Chuck Liddell (21-6) fought one time in 2008. That is the least number of fights “The Iceman” has fought in a year’s time since beginning his professional career in 1998 at UFC 17.

Liddell’s lone 2008 outing did not end well for the man once feared the MMA world over for his knockout power. On September 6, 2008 at UFC 88, Rashad Evans (13-0-1) left Liddell in an unconscious heap inside the Octagon at Philips Arena, in Atlanta, Georgia. It was an image that sent a deafening silence over the thousands of fans who were cheering just seconds before. It was scary.

Rule change made in order to save UFC 97 in Montreal

UFC 97 has been saved. UFC 97: REDEMPTION, headlined by a middleweight title fight between Anderson Silva (23-4) and Thales Leites (14-1), is set to take place at the Bell Center in Montreal, Canada on April 18. However, the Quebec Athletic Commission’s rules regarding mixed martial arts almost forced the UFC to move the event to Las Vegas even after thousands of tickets had been sold.

UFC officials met with the commission on Tuesday, February 17, to try and salvage the event. The original rules of Quebec’s Athletic Commission would make certain techniques that are commonplace in UFC matches illegal. There was no way the world’s premiere mixed martial arts promotion could make such drastic changes as not allowing elbow or knee strikes, which incidentally are two of the main weapons used by the middleweight champion who would be appearing in the main event.
