Catching up with the H.I.T. SQUAD: PRO MMA gym spotlight

In this edition of PRO MMA GYM SPOTLIGHT, we are focusing on the H.I.T. SQUAD located in Granite City, Illinois. Among other fighters, the H.I.T. SQUAD is home to the most dominant welterweight champion in the history of the UFC, Matt Hughes. Hence the name: Hughes Intensive Training = H.I.T. SQUAD

PRO MMA (promma.info) had the privilege of speaking to one of the founding members of the H.I.T. SQUAD, who was also assistant coach for Team Hughes on “The Ultimate Fighter” season 6, Marc Fiore. Marc is not only the Head Trainer at the H.I.T. SQUAD, he is also the main Wrestling/Grappling Coach, fighter manager, corner-man, bus driver, and much more.

Marc brought us up to date on everything going on with the H.I.T. SQUAD including the team going undefeated this past weekend, the gym, classes they offer, their up and coming fighters, Matt Hughes preparing for his upcoming fight with Matt Serra, Robbie Lawler training for his upcoming bout with Jake Shields, if Robbie would ever fight an old rival, and much more.

Mann Talk – Give Shogun a Break

‘Mann Talk’ is a new weekly column from PRO MMA (http://promma.info) staff writer, Richard Mann.

I’ll admit it. Since I don’t really like shelling out the almost 50 bucks it takes to buy a UFC pay per view, I usually head over to the local Hooters to check out the fights. Naturally everyone suspects that I have ulterior motives, especially my girlfriend who isn’t too fond of the girls in the orange shorts and push up bras.

Even though it is free it is always pretty hectic, so I miss out on most of Joe Rogan’s shockingly one-sided commentary. However, there are perks to watching the show along side the meat of the UFC’s fan base. During the Mauricio Shogun Rua versus Mark Coleman fight, the fans were continually voicing their displeasure with the Brazilian’s performance.

Mark Coleman – post UFC 93 interview (video)

Mark Coleman is extremely upset after his TKO loss to Shogun Rua Saturday at UFC 93. He admits it is the most disappointing loss of his career due to the referee stopping the bout with only a few seconds left in the match. Coleman talks as if he’s nowhere near retiring which is a bit surprising considering he’s forty-four years of age.

A word from the Editor: Reflections on UFC 93

This is what some UFC 93 fighters needed.

What an interesting card this was. Some crazy fights we had. Fighters were gassed they were. The UFC should refund people a portion of their Pay Per View bill they should.

I was really interested to see what Mark Coleman was going to look like and my worst fears were confirmed. It was as if we had gone back in a time capsule to UFC 1 for that fight.  On one hand the fight was intriguing to watch, but not because it was two of the top MMA fighters in the world testing their skill, but because I was hoping that not only would the completely exasperated Coleman not drop dead in front of my eyes, but for a few moments it even looked like he may win.

UFC 93 fight night bonuses

The UFC awarded $40,000 bonuses on Saturday January 17 at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland. The awards went to the usual categories except there were two “Fight of the Night” bonuses awarded to two different fights.

“The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis and Chris “Lights Out” Lytle kept their word and delivered a stand up brawl that went to a split decision and deservedly won “Fight of the Night” honors.

The second “Fight of the Night” bonus was awarded to former Pride middleweight Grand Prix winner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and UFC Hall of Famer, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman. Both fighters gave it all they had (which wasn’t much) and were rewarded the extra bonus for their “show of heart.”
