Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua – UFC 97

Two of the sport’s biggest names at 205 will face off in a highly anticpated battle to climb the hill that comprises the stacked Light Heavyweight division in the UFC.

The news came via the UFC 93 post fight press conference, with Dana White announcing the bout being set as the main event for UFC 97 which is to take place on April 18th in Montreal, Canada.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (17-3, 1-1 UFC) is coming off his victory over UFC legend Mark Coleman at UFC 93.  Once highly regarded as the top 205’er on the planet, Shogun was disappointing in his showing versus Forrest Griffin and was slated to fight Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 before suffering yet another injury to his knee.

UFC 93 fight night bonuses

The UFC awarded $40,000 bonuses on Saturday January 17 at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland. The awards went to the usual categories except there were two “Fight of the Night” bonuses awarded to two different fights.

“The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis and Chris “Lights Out” Lytle kept their word and delivered a stand up brawl that went to a split decision and deservedly won “Fight of the Night” honors.

The second “Fight of the Night” bonus was awarded to former Pride middleweight Grand Prix winner, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and UFC Hall of Famer, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman. Both fighters gave it all they had (which wasn’t much) and were rewarded the extra bonus for their “show of heart.”

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to fight Keith Jardine at UFC 96

It was announced today during the UFC 93 broadcast from Dublin, Ireland that the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will fight “The Dean of Mean” Keith Jardine in the main event at UFC 96 in Columbus, Ohio on March 7, 2009.

Quinton Jackson is coming off a huge knockout win against Wanderlei Silva in a grudge match after Silva defeated Jackson twice in Japan in the PRIDE organization. Keith Jardine is also coming off a win. His victory came at UFC 89 where he eeked out a split decision victory against Brandon “The Truth” Vera.

Surely, Jackson is looking to get back in title contention and with a win over Jardine that is most likely right where he will be. Many thought with his victory over Wanderlei the UFC may already match him up against Rashad Evans for a title shot. It will be very interesting to see who Evans gets matched up with for his first Light Heavyweight Title defense.

What about UFC 95 and 96?

This week has practically been a UFC media blitz. With UFC 93 going down today in Dublin and the premiere of UFC Primetime, which is promoting UFC 94, it is hard to even think about anything else in the MMA world.

Perhaps the folks over at ZUFFA have gone ahead and made the mistake of not thinking of anything else. The number one promotion in the MMA business closed out 2008 in style with one of their most stacked cards of the year, UFC 92. However, now they seem to be in danger of producing two less than stellar cards.

Some MMA pundits have complained about the quality of UFC 93, which is headlined by a too late match up between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson and a rematch between Pride GP champions Mark Coleman and Shogun Rua. In a lot of ways this card does not live up to the UFC’s recent level, but it is still far and away better than what is currently scheduled to come next.

Big John McCarthy picks Georges St. Pierre to defeat B.J. Penn at UFC 94

Big John McCarthy a.k.a. The Oracle of MMA

“I believe that B.J. Penn is the number one pound for pound fighter in the world.” Even with those words coming from the legendary MMA referee, Big John McCarthy, he still believes that Georges St. Pierre will defeat Penn in their upcoming bout at UFC 94.

McCarthy sang the praises of Penn’s jiu-jitsu and striking while a guest on Sherdog Radio’s twenty-four hour charity marathon broadcast today. McCarthy said the one chink in B.J.’s armor is his wrestling and that is where Georges St. Pierre excels. Combine that with St. Pierre’s weight advantage, striking prowess, and athleticism and you have to give him the edge over Penn according to the former L.A. police officer.

Big John believes St. Pierre is the number two pound for pound fighter in the world just behind Penn. However, he thinks the extra weight B.J. will have to put on for the fight which is scheduled for 170 lbs. is going to be to his detriment while St. Pierre will be fighting at his optimum weight.
