Coach’s blog – Shut up and get on the f’ing mat

Heart is something that can not be taught.

This is for all those guys that say they want to be fighters. If you train to get in shape, or because you like gym camaraderie, the following isn’t directed at you.

“I can’t train today because I am sore, have a cold, hyper extended my elbow, have a headache, my knee hurts…” Come on guys, training injured or not feeling 100% is part of the game.

Work through the minor injuries and discomforts. How the hell are you going to be able to hang with a guy who is willing to sacrifice his body to become the best if you won’t train because you‘re sore?

Coach’s blog – promotion ethics in regional MMA

Regional promotions are the life blood of the sport.
Regional promotions are the life blood of MMA.

Don’t get tricked into becoming a silent partner.

I know guys that have been promoting MMA shows for years, we’ll call them “Friendly Promotions”, yet they buy the insurance for their shows from another promoter, we’ll call them “Liar Promotions”.

You can get an insurance policy for 10 shows for about what Liar Promotions charges other shows for one event. He isn’t doing you a favor, I’m not sure if it’s even legal. In fact, it isn’t, you have to be a licensed insurance agent to sell insurance, and it’s definitely illegal to allow someone else to use insurance that’s in your name for their event.

Coach’s blog – things that go on at the gym

Class is in session at SSF Submission Academy.
Class is in session at SSF Submission Academy.

Blinky, 5 Miles, Grizzly Adams, Forrest Gump… Yeah, you all have nicknames that all the other guys in the gym know you by, but you have no idea you even have a nickname.  We don’t refer to you by your name when you aren’t around; only your nickname. To be honest, we don’t know your real name half the time.

I know this sounds a little shitty but hell, guys come and go all the time at the gym and we don’t have the time to memorize your name. Once you’ve been there a while and made some road trips with the team then we will start to memorize your name.

It’s kind of funny that now I am writing this blog for ProMMA.info some of the guys are worried they are the subject of my blog or that they will be the next subject matter. You will all eventually be mentioned. It’s not done out of spite, dislike, hatred or disrespect. I picked you or at least your characteristics because it’s an annoying trait that you have but don’t worry; every gym has a guy like you.

Coach’s blog – “That’s not how my old teacher taught me”

Coach Ron Dayley at the UFC weigh ins.
Coach Ron Dayley at the UFC weigh ins.

I know that every instructor out there has had a student say to them, “That’s not how I learned to do that” or “I learned to do it like this.”

Every submission and set up is a little different from one person to the next. There are many ways to do each submission. Catch-as-catch will have a different grip or angle for a move than BJJ but it doesn’t mean that one is right and the other is wrong.

There are a million variations to each move, so yes, you may have been taught it one way. Now shut up and learn it the way your instructor is showing you. It’s good to have variation; everyone needs to play to their own attributes.

Coach’s blog – hot dogs and onions

Coach's Public Service Announcement - Wash your pits, balls, and ass before coming to BJJ class.
MMA Etiquette - Wash your pits, balls, and ass before coming to BJJ class.

Gym date 10.01.09 (Hot Dogs and Onions) – Our mission is to understand the hot dog and onion phenomenon.  Nothing is worse than training with someone who stinks.  I hate it when you shake someone’s hand to start rolling with them and you get a strong whiff of boiled hot dogs and onions.  Come on guys, use deodorant, take a shower, and wash your gear.

I have known guys that have told me that they don’t wash their fight shorts because it’s their lucky pair.  Or that they have never washed their jock strap because it’s their secret weapon.  When did grappling become chemical warfare?

Coach’s blog – worst training injuries

If one of your testicles gets to be this size, you may want to go to the doctor.
If one of your testicles gets to be this size, you may want to go to the doctor.

Gym Date – 9.18.09

Our mission to decide what is the worst training injury. I think I win, but others may disagree. Here it goes…

While training in California I felt something like a groin pull while I was rolling. So when the round was up I went to the bathroom to take a leak. That’s when I looked down and saw that one of my balls was the size of an orange. So I walked out to the gym and told the guys what happened and one of the guys took me to the hospital.

Coach’s blog – gym date 9-14-09

Listen to the coach; you might end up in the UFC too.

Our mission is to solve the riddle of why students can’t grasp that when we are training grappling there is no need to pretend or show the class you have an opening to strike your partner.

It seems the guy that has something to prove is acting up because he was dominated for the past two minutes and fifty seconds of the round. It makes no difference to this wanna-be, we’ll call him “Joe,” that the guy he is rolling with didn’t pretend to strike him when they were in dominate position, or that anyone else in class pretended to strike their training partners.

Nor does it matter to Joe that he has never fought before or that the guy he just threw the fake punches at has over 10 fights and would murder him.
