ProMMA.info Amateur Fighter of 2009: Thomas Campbell

Even though MMA may not have the most developed amateur system, there are still many fighters out there plying their trade in the ranks. In 2009 a handful of amateur fighters received some mainstream attention through the Las Vegas based Tuff-N-Uff promotion. However, on the other side of the country Thomas Campbell put together a solid run, and earned himself the title of the ProMMA.info Amateur Fighter of 2009.

Campbell, a 23-year-old featherweight, began fighting two years ago. After a few fights, the native of Clarksville, Tenn. began training with Ron Daley at SSF Submission Academy. In 2009 Campbell went 10-1 to run his overall amateur record to 16-2.

The highlight of his year was winning an eight-man HookNShoot tournament. On that night, Campbell defeated three opponents to take the crown.

Coach’s blog – Things I’ve seen over the years

When you travel to fight shows as much as I do, you see a lot of crazy stuff. One time, I was at a fight show in Ky. when I saw an overweight, out of shape fighter stick his head out of the ring and empty the contents of his stomach on a judge that was sitting ringside.

I and most of the people at the show laughed our asses off. I think the only two people not laughing were the fighter who was disqualified for puking and the judge who was covered in vomit.

This isn’t the only time I’ve seen this. My friend Ray Elbe posted a video of himself on YouTube where he is in a grappling match and he puked on his opponents head. Here is the video of Ray’s match http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7qTY1c0zd0

Thomas Campbell of SSF Submission Academy Clarksville, Tenn., and Steven Durr of SSF Murray, Ky., both fought in the HooknShoot 8 Man 145lbs Tournament.

We knew that the competition was going to be tough and we started training for it a month out.  Since we didn’t know who or what order they would be fighting we worked on everything, especially conditioning since the winner of the tournament could possibly fight a total of 9 rounds.
