Stop it Joe!

Joe Stevenson fought Diego Sanchez tonight in London, England at UFC 95. Diego looked really good in his striking with knees, low and high kicks, and great boxing. He also showed some good scrambles the few times the fight went to the ground. The difference in the fight was Diego’s diversity of striking compared to Stevenson’s absolute predictability.

Joe Stevenson was in a boxing match. I think he threw one kick the whole fight. He did attempt a couple of take downs but once they were stuffed he went right back to the boxing match. I’ve talked with some fighters who don’t realize they are losing because they are having so much fun. In all fairness, maybe this was the case with Joe. But then, that is where your corner-men come in between rounds, to help you make those adjustments.

UFC 95 bonuses: Sanchez, Stevenson, Thiago, and Maia earn $40,000

Main event fighters Diego Sanchez and Joe Stevenson, along with Paulo Thiago and Demian Maia each earned $40,000 bonuses for their performances at “UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson.” The bonuses were announced by the UFC at the post-fight press conference.

The $40,000 payouts were down from January’s UFC 94 $65,000 bonuses, but are consistent with what the UFC paid out during their last trip to the UK for UFC 93.

In the night’s main event, Diego Sanchez’s first fight at lightweight turned into a slug fest with Joe Stevenson for the entire 15 minute fight. Sanchez mixed his strikes well as Stevenson stalked him throughout the match.

Sanchez may fight Stevenson

Diego Sanchez’s first venture into the lightweight division may pit him against another TUF winner. Sanchez has verbally agreed to face TUF season 2 winner, Joe “Daddy” Stevenson at UFC 95.

Sanchez informed the public via myspace that he would be dropping down to 155 earlier this month. “The Nightmare” dropped two straight decisions to American Kickboxing Academy welterweights, Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch back in 2007.

Stevenson’s most recent venture into the Octagon ended badly for the former title contender. Kenny Florian forced “Daddy” to tap out in the first round of their UFC 91 bout. Once at number one contender status, Stevenson has dropped two of his last three bouts.
