M-1 Global event moved to Kansas City

Amsterdam, Holland — M-1 Global (www.M-1Global.com) officially announced Monday morning that its August 28 “Breakthrough” event scheduled to be televised live in the U.S. has been moved from the Los Angeles Convention Center to the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City.

“The change in venues is unfortunate, however, the change was necessitated due to circumstances beyond our control,” said M-1 Global Chief Operating Officer Joost Raimond. “We had a partner in Los Angeles that backed out of certain commitments. However, instead of letting fighters and fans down by cancelling the event, we worked diligently to find a new location in Kansas City. At no point in time did we entertain the idea of canceling our first ‘Breakthrough’ event.”

Strikeforce / M-1 Global conference call featuring Fedor Emelianenko

Strikeforce and M-1 Global held a joint media conference call today concerning their co-promotional efforts involving Fedor Emelianenko. Scott Coker, Vadim Finkelchtein, Ken Hershman, and Fedor himself all fielded questions from the media. PRO MMA (promma.info) also took part in the call.

Despite the fact that every organization Fedor has fought for is no longer in operation, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker assured the media that this deal with Fedor will not be a financial burden upon the promotion and he would not have signed Fedor if he thought there was a possibility it could put Strikeforce out of business.

Here is the complete audio of the call. (They had a few technical challenges at times)

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker talks Fedor

Strikeforce was founded in 1985 and has been putting on MMA events since 2006. However, CEO and Founder Scott Coker may have made the smartest business move in the history of his company last week when he signed a co-promotion deal with M-1 Global that would allow the world’s number one heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, to fight under the Strikeforce banner.

Fedor trained for months to fight Josh Barnett at “Affliction: Trilogy” on Aug. 1. After Barnett tested positive for steroids, the fight was scrapped and the company folded its MMA promotion. There is nothing worse than a fighter without a home — much less the top heavyweight on the planet.

When talking with Sports 1140 KHTK AM on Monday, Coker talked about the opportunity to bid on Fedor’s contract. “Fedor Emelianenko, you know, he was the hottest free agent on the market, and very rare does a fighter of that level become a free agent,” said Coker.

“Deep Thoughts” with Jerry Millen

Remember Saturday Night Live’s “Deep Thoughts” skit? Well, here’s the 2009 MMA version with the sport’s own great philosopher, Jerry Millen. Millen’s quote comes from the recent M-1 press conference. I guess for Millen it was a pretty deep thought, I just have no idea what he means. Please like & share:

New interview with Fedor Emelianenko on fighting for the UFC

Fedor says he has three more fights on his M-1 Global contract. This seems to be the problem with the co-promotion that has been largely over-looked. He is not exactly a “free agent” as long as he is still under contract with M-1 Global. Fedor also talks about the new EA Sports MMA video game. … Read more

Dana White says the UFC will not co-promote

UFC president Dana White confirmed today during his teleconference that the promotion has worked diligently to try and sign Fedor Emelianenko.

Emelianenko’s Manager, Vadim Finkelstein, has been all over the news recently claiming that the former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion will only fight on a card co-promoted by M-1 Global.

Dana White responded to this claim in his usual colloquial style, “M-1’s going to co-promote? They’re going to help us? That shit probably works in Russia. Not here.”
