Deray Davis and Mark Miller weighed in for their Nov. 7 Strikeforce fight, however, due to time constraints, the fight did not happen.

Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz confirmed with ProMMA.info today, that both Mark Miller and Deray Davis not only received their show money, but each fighter was also given their win bonuses.

The decision was made once a subsequent fight could not be secured for each fighter on a local promotion’s upcoming event. This was the honorable thing to do for the San Jose based promotion and will go a long way in building integrity for the organization.

The welterweight fight between Miller and Davis was originally slated to be on the undercard of the Nov. 7 Fedor-Rogers event that took place in Hoffman Estates, Ill. and aired live on CBS.

Strikeforce Challengers proves successful for local fighters

The fourth edition of the Strikeforce Challengers series took place Friday night, Nov. 6, in Fresno, Calif. The local MMA scene was represented well with a handful of fighters from the Fresno area on both the under card and main card. Fresno legend and staph infection survivor Cole Escovedo was first up.

Escovedo’s near death experience from a misdiagnosed illness is well documented. Cole came out with fire in his eyes and look possessed from the opening bell. His first offensive attempt came in the form of a flying submission attempt.

Although unsuccessful, he followed that up with an enormous high kick that found the mark. Escovedo followed his stunned opponent to the mat instantly. The referee was right on top of the action but hesitated in stopping the fight, allowing “The Apache Kid” to land several unanswered and unnecessary shots.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO vs. BRETT ROGERS

RICHARD MANN: I was thinking about taking Brett Rogers, but only because I did not want Ken Pavia to feel all alone. Rogers might impress a few people, but he is going to be submitted. The argument that no one has been able to take Rogers to the ground is mute. Fedor is Fedor for a reason, and he is going to win this one by submission.

MMA’S Biggest Loser – Fast Eddie’s week 2 recap

Class is in session for Fast Eddie at the Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Pleasanton, Calif.

Well, week two is now in the books. What a week it was. My training increased this week, from two to three days. Monday started off normally with two Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu classes. This was the first time in years that I have had the opportunity to roll and train with higher belts. Insert Roscoe Roatch.

Roscoe is a purple belt under Dave Camarillo and will run the classes when Dave is not around. Training with Roscoe was great for several reasons. First and foremost, his care and concern for my physical limitations with my back was so appreciated.

He did not set out to hurt me but to help me get reacquainted with the details of my technique that have built up a considerable amount of rust. However, after the two classes the rust started falling off quickly and I felt myself getting back on the bike.

Gracie Combatives – a PROMMA.INFO product review

Order Gracie Combatives or learn more at www.graciecombatives.com.

I had the pleasure of being introduced to Ryron Gracie at the Hope of Mother Charity event. Ryron and his brother Rener are close friends to Tareq Azim and came out to show his support.

In talking with the son of Rorion Gracie (UFC founder and creator), the discussion quickly shifted to the focus of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Ryron and his family believe, and rightfully so, that the focus of BJJ schools are on competition and not self defense.

“There is no point in learning the half guard if you cannot escape a headlock.” This was the motivation in Ryron and Rener in creating the Gracie Combatives DVD’s. They wanted to spread the word and ideals that was taught to them by their grandfather, Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

“First I want to say, good job Quinton Jackson” – Cung Le

Cung Le is making the best use of his talents inside and outside the cage.

Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le’s newest film Pandorum opened on Sept. 25. Le joined PROMMA.INFO’s The INFO radio show this week to discuss his new career.

“I was introduced to Jeremy Bolt by my manger. He is the producer of Resident Evil. He said there was an Asian lead that they were looking to cast. They had not found a Japanese character yet as they originally wrote it. So they opened it up to all Asian actors. This gave me about a month to get ready.”
