‘Cyborg’ vs. Akano set for Strikeforce

Cris “Cyborg” Santos finally has an opponent for Strikeforce’s ‘Shamrock vs Diaz’ card. “Cyborg” will face Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano in the lone female bout on the April 11th card in San Jose, CA.

PRO MMA ( received this official press release from Strikeforce confirming the bout. The Chute Boxe product has been believed to be on a collision course with popular female fighter; Gina Carano. Santos will need to get past Akano in order to keep interest in a potential bout with Carano elevated.

Rival forces from different worlds will meet when women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1) of Brazil collides with “Smack Girl” Champion Hitomi “Girlfight Monster” Akano (14-5) of Japan, in a 145-pound showdown, live on Saturday, April 11, part of Strikeforce’s Shamrock vs. Diaz stacked fight card, and airing live on SHOWTIME from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Joe Lauzon out until 2010

Joe Lauzon indicated on his website last week that he will be sidelined for ten months due to surgery on his right knee. Lauzon, who recently defeated Jeremy Stephens at UFC Fight Night 17, will not return to action until spring of next year. Earlier today PRO MMA ( obtained this official statement from “J-Lau’s” management regarding his injury.

UFC lightweight prospect Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon (18-4, 5 KOs, 13 submissions) will undergo knee surgery this Friday, sidelining the 24-year-old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist until next year, at Sullivan Orthopedic Care.

Lauzon has had problems in the past including arthroscopic surgery on the meniscectomies of both knees. This time, however, Lauzon needs ACL surgery on his right knee, in addition to having his meniscus repaired.

Couture vs. Nogueira agree to meet at UFC 101

Randy “The Natural” Couture and Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira both verbally agreed to face off at UFC 101. The two former UFC heavyweight champions will step into the Octagon at a yet to be announced date in August.

Couture (16-9) and Noguiera (31-5-1) found themselves on the losing side of the UFC’s pseudo heavyweight tournament in their last bouts, with both men losing their titles to Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir respectively.

A win would most certainly catapult the victor back into title contention; however, the loser could face many questions surrounding their status within the division as well as retirement.

South Carlonia House passes MMA bill

South Carolina's State Flag

South Carolina’s House of Representatives voted unanimously to pass a bill that would lead towards the sport of MMA being sanctioned in the state.

A 57-0 vote sent the bill to South Carolina’s Senate for its final phase. However, fans in South Carolina shouldn’t be popping champagne corks any time soon.

Originally, the bill found its way to South Carolina’s House floor toward the end of the state’s legislative session last year. Reports indicate that it may be close to a year before an MMA event is held in the Palmetto State.

PRO MMA exclusive interview: CCFC Middleweight Champion David Mitchell

PRO MMA ( caught up with Cage Combat 185 pound champion, David Mitchell, Wednesday afternoon to discuss his recent victory at the Grace Pavilion. Mitchell defeated Josh Neal twenty-eight seconds in the first round of his middleweight title defense this past Saturday night at CCFC-10: Battle for Nor-Cal.

Mitchell, 29, fights out of the Nor-Cal Fighting Alliance in Santa Rosa, CA under the tutelage of UFC veteran, Dave Terrell. Mitchell remains undefeated in his young MMA career, racking up a record of 7-0 with six wins coming by way of submission. Mitchell continues to make waves as one of Northern California’s prospects in the 185 pound division.

Breaking News: Thomson vs. Melendez 2 set for Strikeforce in April

Sources close to PRO MMA ( confirmed that Josh “The Punk” Thomson and Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez will meet for the second time on Strikeforce’s April 11th card.

Thomson and Melendez fought on June 27th last year at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The two lightweights battled for five full rounds, with Thomson earning the Unanimous Decision victory and the Strikeforce 155 pound title.

KJ Noons had been offered to fight “The Punk” in a Elite XC- Strikeforce unification bout; however, Noons elected to continue to pursue his boxing career.

CCFC-10: Battle for Nor-Cal photo gallery

PRO MMA ( was in Santa Rosa, CA sitting cage side photographing the most electrifying moments of CCFC-10: Battle for Nor-Cal.

The evening featured 10 exciting bouts, a packed house, ring girls and stars from the MMA world at the Grace Pavilion this past Saturday night. Cain Velasquez, Josh Thomson, Jon Fitch, Nick and Nate Diaz were just a few of the top mixed martial artist who were in attendance for Cage Combat’s tenth event.
