“One down and one to go” -Gilbert Melendez

“One down and one to go.” This was the comment that Gilbert Melendez made at the post fight press conference in reference to his third round TKO stoppage of Mitsuhiro Ishida and the next fighter on his hit list; Josh Thomson.

Regardless of Melendez’s excitement in avenging his first professional loss, he is undeterred from his ultimate goal; regaining the Strikeforce lightweight title from the currently injured Thomson.

“This title does not mean much. Josh is the real champion and that is the fight I want,” Melendez said. The interim champ showed improvements on several fronts, the most impressive being his standup.

The guard system that I am a fan of is GET UP! –Dave Camarillo

Dave Camarillo, BJJ black belt and head grappling coach of the famed American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, sums up his philosophy on the guard in one short statement.

The founder of Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu joined THE INFO, the official podcast of PRO MMA (promma.info), Monday night for nearly two hours and covered a wide array of topics including his roots in Judo under his father Jim, his introduction and subsequent fall out years later with former instructor Ralph Gracie, and his current stable of world beaters that train under him.

No subject was off topic with Dave and it made for an amazing interview. One of the main themes Camarillo stated over and over was the difference between a fighter and a martial artist. Camarillo defines both terms in his blog and he really hits the nail on the head.

STRIKEFORCE: SHAMROCK vs. DIAZ live results

PRO MMA (promma.info) was sitting cage side at “Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Diaz” Saturday night, April 11, in San Jose, California. From the first bout to the last, the entire card was action packed. Only one fight went the distance and it was on the under card un-televised portion. Showtime viewers got a real treat with this reintroduction to MMA.

In the end, “The Legend” seemed more like a fable as the younger, taller, longer, and larger Nick Diaz kept Shamrock at bay with jabs and combinations. Shamrock occasionally found his way through the forest of punches but it was rare and even then it was only one or two shots at a time.

2009 Pan Ams – Braga Neto takes two titles

This year’s Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championships recently took place this past weekend in Carson, California. The action was heavy until the finals of the black belt division. Three of the division finals did not have a contested match as both fighters represented the same team. This is a dilemma that will hold back the sport of BJJ from its huge potential.

The concept of respect amongst the teams is a huge factor in the Jiu-Jitsu world, but I feel it is disrespectful when representing your team to not leave it all on the mat. I reflect back to the days when there was only one Gracie academy and the internal academy qualifiers were akin to their own championships as teammates would battle it out for the honor to fill one of the brackets against the other academies.
