John Cena to star in Transformers spin off trying to revitalize franchise

Please God no.

Another Transformers movie is coming and somewhere Michael Bay just blew something up in celebration. Arguably the most popular Transformer in the series is Bumblebee in terms of merchandise sales, and John Cena is currently the most popular WWE star with kids. So surely Transformers plus the doctor of Fruity Pebbles will equal box office magic. This news came by way of The Hollywood Reporter.

It will be set in 1987 and features Cena and Bumblebee and that is basically all that is known right now other than the release date and who is involved. The film is produced by Michael Bay and Lorenzo di Bonaventura, with executive producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner, Chris Brigham and Mark Vahradian. Production began today in California and the movie will hit theaters on December 21st, 2018.

If you take a look at these numbers from BoxOfficeMojo you clearly see the declining figures with the last film being an absolute bomb compared to the previous installments. The Last Knight may have lost money! The budget was somewhere around $217M so double that for marketing and other expenses and it’s not looking good. The Last Knight made a dismal $128M in domestic sales from a big budget blockbuster film series and that is not received well by the studio execs. The idea reportedly is that a fresh face and a more simplistic plot and lower effects budget will fix the declining sales. We’ll wait and see.
