Junior Dos Santos spoke with Combate and made it clear he believes his latest victory gives him the #1 spot for a bout with heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic. JDS got knocked out by Alistair Overeem and then defeated Ben Rothwell via an uncharacteristic unanimous decision. Some believe that the once unstoppable force has gone the way of Chuck Liddell and many others who didn’t realize that they were a step past their best fighting days until it was too late. Still, he believes wholeheartedly that he should be next in line.

The fight that makes the most sense now is a Miocic rematch. I was the last one to beat him, so nothing’s fairer than that. Besides, I defeated a guy who was very qualified in my last outing, Ben Rothwell. Everyone was saying he could get a title shot if he got past me. I fit perfectly in a title shot right now. It makes total sense. Velasquez could get a shot, sure, but he’s scheduled to fight Werdum, so it won’t happen now. My fight against Miocic was really tough. I think everyone would like to see it again

Also, according to JDS Alistair Overeem refused to fight him again so that leaves few options that would further his cause to gain a title shot. Miocic will be out until March most likely and that means JDS will have to find someone else willing to risk a possible championship opportunity. Given Dos Santos’s history of heavy hands – good luck “Cigano”.
