gehrts-1

Before Knoxville’s Nick Gehrts steps back into the Valor Fights cage for the seventh time at Valor Fights 38 versus Zack Hicks on November 5 in Nashville, LIVE on FloCombat, he caught up with Pro MMA Now.

How did you find this sport to begin with?

Like a lot of people, I found it on TV when I was a kid, probably when I was 15. Me and my brother got the idea to get some gear from a sporting goods store. We just beat each other up on our hardwood floor (laughs). Eventually I decided to go to a gym and try it out.

Why MMA?

I don’t know. It never would’ve crossed my mind otherwise, but I found it, fell in love with it, and it changed my life. Definitely never did I see myself being a fighter. But I did decide that when I was 15.

Is this the biggest fight of your career?

(Laughs) No. This is just another stepping stone. Just another wrestler who’s going to try to stall me on the ground. That’s the only way that anyone could beat me in the past, and that’s all my opponent has. But that doesn’t matter; I’m going to put him to sleep.

Does fighting in the main event add any pressure?

No, not at all. Part of me would prefer to fight earlier so I can get my hand raised faster and enjoy the fights as a fan, but fighting in the main event is a big part of being a successful mixed martial artist. I have big dreams in this sport, and there will hopefully be a lot of main event fights as I continue to climb.

Where does a win put you?

Really, it’s just another step in the right direction. I’ll be happy, but it’s just another step in the right direction that will lead to bigger and better things down the road. But I am excited to have my hand raised, don’t get me wrong.
