Johnny Sanguinetti recently spoke with ProMMANow.com before his Global Warriors FC bout on the weekend in Brantford, Ontario, Canada.

How were you introduced to MMA to begin with?

My brother and I were introduced to it when we were kids. I was an overweight kid, so I thought martial arts — specifically boxing at the time — would be a great way to get in shape.

What is it about MMA?

I enjoy problem solving, and I think it’s the most in-depth sport there is. There are so many variables at play and so many situations. I really like the idea of tailoring my game to beat someone else. I like the idea that somebody is preparing to try to beat me, while I’m preparing to beat them — then we get to see who comes out on top (laughs). On top of that, it’s a great way to test yourself mentally.

Where do you think you would be without MMA?

I’d probably still be overweight. I wouldn’t be confident with myself, and I wouldn’t be very happy. I’d probably be working a boring job and feeling like I really haven’t reached my potential.

What are your goals in MMA?

My goals in mixed martial arts are to compete and win fights, of course, but the end goal is to develop a fighting system that I have confidence in teaching other people so they can have a career of their own or to have fun and have self-defense skills.
