ufc_on_fox_18It’s fight night in New Jersey and top light heavyweight contenders Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Ryan “Darth” Bader will meet in the main event live on FOX from the Prudential Center in Newark. Heavyweights Josh Barnett and Ben Rothwell collide in the co-headliner.

UFC on FOX 18 preliminary card action will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. PT) streaming live on Fight Pass, then moving to the FOX Sports 1 prelims at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT) and the “big” FOX main card at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

Tony Martin vs. Felipe Olivieri

Round 1 – Takedown from Olivieri but Martin is back up pretty quick. Olivieri with a leg kick that buckles Martin’s leg. As Martin looks for a single, he eats several elbows to the side of the head. More hard low kicks from Olivieri. Spinning backfist, knee and high kick from Olivieri before the bell. 10-9 Olivieri.

Round 2 – Overhand right from Olivieri, then more low kicks, and jabs. Low kick from Martin. Olivieri continues to land low kicks now and then but Martin is having more success with his hands this round.  Olivieri is cut over his left eye. Martin hurts him with punches and eats a flurry, lands a right over the top and clinches up out of desperation to run out the time. 10-9 Martin.

Round 3 – Hard low kick from Olivieri. Then a hard kick to the body and more low kicks. Body jab from Olivieri. Martin pushes him to the cage as he looks for a takedown. Martin ends up getting Olivieri down taking his back then submitting him with a rear-naked choke.

Levan Makashvili vs. Damon Jackson

Round 1 – Technical difficulties.

Round 2 – Jackson cut under his right eye. Makashvili cut him with a left hook but Jackson got the better of the standup overall. No takedowns.

Round 3 – Jackson pressing. Stalemate in the clinch, ref separates them. Jackson hit Makashvili with an illegal knee while he had one hand down. Time is called, he’s okay to continue. … Now Jackson takes a poke in the eye and time is called again. … Point deducted for knee to head and eye poke; a combined penalty. UFC’s Marc Ratner disagrees with the decision because he thinks they were accidents. Under a minute to go. Body kick from Makashvili. Body kick from Jackson. Jab from Jackson. They tie up, Makashvili looks for a takedown.

Matt Dwyer vs. Randy Brown

Round 1 – Brown taking a bit to get warmed up. Dwyer’s standup looking pretty good. Brown got hit with an overhand at one point.

Round 2 – Dwyer pressing, Brown fires back with kicks. Overhand right from Dwyer, couple low kicks follow. Nice jab from Brown. Clinch knees from both guys as Brown pushes Dwyer to the cage. Beautiful judo throw from Brown and he’s looking for the D’arce. He lets it go as they get back to their feet. Clinched against the cage. Takedown from Dwyer but he’s unable to keep him there. Brown lands several elbows to the side of the head on the way up. They end the round clinched. 10-9 Brown.

Round 3 – Brown starts strong with punches and Dwyer is hurt against the cage, but Dwyer ends up tying Brown up and looking for his back. But Brown takes him down and jumps on Dwyer’s back as he stands up. He lets it go and they square off. Overhand right from Dwyer. He’s cut under his left eye. Brown ties him up against the cage. Time is called as Dwyer takes a knee to the groin. Body kick from Dwyer. Two big knees from Brown just miss. Dwyer with a judo throw attempt but ends up on bottom. Brown looks for the D’arce again with just over a minute to go. Lets it go. Dwyer tries to drag him down but ends up on bottom. Back up and they slug it out until the bell. 10-9 Brown.

Alex Caceres vs. Masio Fullen

Round 1 – Bruce Leeroy’s fro is laughing at Fullen as he smiles and throws leg kicks. He takes a short right from Fullen. Left check hook from Fullen. Alex still smiling. Alex pursuing. Fullen ducks into a left kick, partially blocked. They collide shins, and give each other a five. Spin kick from Alex. Side kick to the gut. Head kick from Fullen skims the fro. 360 degree roundhouse from Caceres to the face. Fullen is stunned as they pummel in the clinch, trip takedown from Caceres but Fullen is right back up. Knee on the break from Bruce Leeroy. Caceres bleeding from his mouth. Side kick from Alex. 10-9 Caceres.

Round 2 – Right from Fullen. Alex ducks a high kick. Spinning back kick from Fullen and a backhand. Nice kick combo from Alex. Fullen ties him up for a couple seconds, then they square up. Nice straight left from Alex connects. Alex getting off with his hands, then a high kick. Great defense too from Alex. High kick scores. Low kick. He’s looking great. Right from Fullen. Fullen ducks into a knee to the gut, a hard one. Alex presses him to the cage. Just over a minute remaining. Body kick from Alex. Alex ducks a high kick and fires back with punches. Knee to the head in the clinch from Alex. 10-9 Caceres.

Round 3 – Body kick from Alex. Low kick inside from Caceres. Fullen with a side kick. Spinning low kick from Alex. Jab from Fullen. Alex ducks a jumping high kick. Low kick from Fullen. Left check hook from Fullen. Low kick Alex. High kick. Clinch knee to the body from Alex, then a high kick. Nice left from Alex, and another. Left counter from Fullen, another. Alex throws him off balance and lands a couple short rights. Couple jabs as Alex keeps on the pressure and pours it on in the final seconds. 10-9 Caceres.

George Sullivan vs. Alexander Yakovlev

Round 1 – Yakovlev is a Russian gangster rapper. That’s true. Low kick from Sullivan but takes a harder one back inside. The gangster rapper dumps Sullivan. But he’s back up pretty quick. Low kick from Sullivan but Yakovlev times it for a takedown and takes side mount. He moves to full mount. Sullivan gives up his back and gets to his feet but gets free and they square up. Yakovlev lands a left jab, then a right hook out of nowhere and Sullivan goes down and out. Yakovlev follows up with a couple more punches.

Dustin Ortiz vs. Wilson Reis

Round 1 – This flyweight match should be fast and furious and is an important fight for the division. Couple straight rights from Ortiz. Front kick to the body. Inside leg kick from Reis. Right hook from Reis. Right over the top from Dustin. High kick from Ortiz blocked. Reis backs him to the cage and Ortiz goes for the takedown, stuffed. Clinch, left on the break from Reis. Reis comes in swinging goes for the single. Ends up with a body lock takedown, goes for the back but he slips off. Reis lands a right on the way up. Body kick from Ortiz. Left hook counter from Ortiz. He catches a body kick. Ortiz stuffs a takedown. Reis pushes him to the cage. Body kick from Ortiz on the break. Ortiz shoots for a low single, he eats some hammerfists and then Reis turns it around for a takedown at the bell. 10-9 Reis.

Round 2 – Left hook from Reis. Body kick. Reis is so big I’m curious if his cardio will fade. Ortiz shoots, stuffed. Superman punch from Ortiz. Reis counters with a punch. Reis shoots, takes a couple elbows to the side of the head. Gets a body lock but can’t capitalize. They square up. Ortiz with a body kick. Body kick from Ortiz. Right from Reis and a right from Ortiz. Ortiz shoots off a low kick but it’s stuffed. Reis gets a quick takedown and puts him to the cage. They square up. Low shot from Dustin is stuffed. Reis with another takedown but Ortiz is right back up. They square up. Reis times a takedown. Takes Ortiz’s back with both hooks in. 38 seconds left. Good defense from Ortiz as they roll over. Reis switches to an armbar attempt but time is up. 10-9 Reis.

Round 3 – They come out swinging before Reis is able to get Dustin down once again. Reis takes his back but Dustin is back to his feet and is back in his face. Reis is a real seasoned veteran and it shows in his grappling as that’s where he’s been winning the fight. He gets another takedown. Ortiz back up with under 2 minutes to go. Dustin hits a switch and gets a quick takedown of his own. Back up and Reis gets another takedown with just over a minute to go. Reis gets full mount. Dustin gives up his back as Reis looks for the neck, softening him up with strikes. He gets back up, then takes a knee, then back up. Reis controls him until the bell. 10-9 Reis. Good learning experience for Ortiz. Reis is a tough dude.

Kevin Casey vs. Rafael Natal

Round 1 – Rickson Gracie vs. Renzo Gracie BJJ. They trade on the feet for now. Hard switch low kick from Kevin, then a nice straight left. This sets up a takedown attempt from Natal. Casey turns him to the cage. He looks for a single, eats a few shots. Natal breaks free of the clinch. Half the round down. Overhand counter right from Natal sets up a takedown. Inside Casey’s full guard. Casey gets to his feet pretty quick and gets his own takedown. Natal back up and breaks free. Natal shoots under a punch for another attempt but it’s stuffed. Casey lands a couple right hands but at the bell Natal lands a right that drops Casey. Good action!

Round 2 – Natal lands a kick to the groin with his first strike and time is called. Natal hurts him again with a right hook, then gets a takedown. He lands a few body shots before Casey gets to his feet. Natal with a few knees to the body in the clinch. Couple more shots from Natal before they separate and square up. Low kick and another takedown from natal with about 1:20 left in the round. Natal inside his guard throwing hammerfists as the seconds count down.

Round 3 – Low kick from Natal followed by a couple punches. Casey telegraphs an uppercut. He lands a straight left. Right counter from Natal, then a takedown. Hammerfists from Natal. He passes to half guard. Natal moves to full mount with 2 minutes to go. He looks for an arm triangle, loses it, but gets right back to full mount. He postures up with punches. Ref wants to see Casey is still in the fight, he does not do that and the fight is stopped.

Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira

Round 1 – Olivier landing some body kicks. Left body kick from Olivier. Low kick across the thigh. Ferreira tags him on a counter. Body kick from Olivier but Ferreira counters with a short left. Head kick from Olivier. They tie up against the cage briefly. Left over the top from Ferreira then a knee to the body. They square up in the center. Body kick from Ferreira. Pretty close.

Round 2 – They trade punches to start the round. Olivier looking for the takedown against the cage but Ferreira defends and they square up. Left to the body, then a head kick from Ferreira. Olivier shoots in and is able to get a trip takedown but Ferreira is right back up. Punch combo and body kick from Ferreira. Olivier lands in return, hits an uppercut. Body kick from Aubin-Mercier. He lands a head kick and Ferreira walks through it. Straight left from Olivier and a right hook.

Round 3 – High kick and a low inside kick from Ferreira. Body kick from Olivier. Takedown from Aubin-Mercier. But Ferreira is right back up. Right counter from Aubin-Mercier. Ferreira ends up on top during a scramble after Aubin-Mercier initiated the takedown. Ferreira takes his back and is softening him up with punches. Both hooks in. Ferreira looking for the choke. Now goes to half guard on top, lets go the choke. He drops elbows. 2 minutes left. Ferreira takes his back again, body triangle locked on. Under 30 seconds to go now. 10. 5. 10-9 Ferreira.

Sage Northcutt vs. Bryan Barberena

Round 1 – Sage comes in swinging, eats one prior to clinching up. Barberena turns him to the cage. Sage breaks out to the center. Sage just misses a hook kick. Sage drops him with a left, he tries to pounce but Barberena recovers and pushes him to the cage. Sage backs out with punches then lands a big takedown. Sage jumps on his back but can’t hold it and pushes Barberena back to the cage. He lands a left right on the break. He lands a right counter and a backhand. Two straight hard rights. Barberena with a right hook counter. Excellent takedown transition from Sage but Barberena is right back up. Sage backs out. Jab from Sage. He shoots. Stuffed. Barberena trips him to the ground, but Sage is up quickly. Nice right counter from Barberena, he does it again. Sage fires back and gets countered with a left. Baberena’s face is busted up. 10-9 Northcutt.

Round 2 – Sage with a weird somersault kick but ends up on his back with Barberena beating him up with ground and pound. He tries holding on to Barberena but eats a big elbow. More punches and elbows from Barberena. Barberena in half guard now, still dominating, dropping hard elbows. Half the round down. Sage getting busted up a bit. Barberena looking for an arm triangle. Barberena is on the wrong side technically for the choke but Sage taps and the golden boy hits a speed bump in his ascension.

Iuri Alcântara vs. Jimmie Rivera

Round 1 – Spinning backfist attempt from Rivera after taking a low kick from Iuri. Iuri with an elbow and right hook on the break. Hard straight right from Rivera. Knee to the body from Iuri. Rivera is looking to take his head off. Hard body kick from Rivera. Right hook. Another, over the top. High kick from Iuri. Left and right hooks from Rivera as he continues to press. Body shot from Rivera. Counter hook from Iuri. Body kick and a left hand from Iuri. Rivera takes an eye poke and time is briefly called. They trade punches before Rivera lands a big takedown at the bell. 10-9 Rivera.

Round 2 – Front kick from Iuri. He’s much taller. Hard left hook from Rivera as he backs Iuri to the cage. Counter hook from Iuri. Right hand and a low kick from Rivera. Body lock, he presses Iuri to the cage. Half the round down. Short punches in the clinch from Rivera. Knees to the thigh. Ref separates them. Front kick from Iuri. He stuffs a takedown attempt. Sraight left from Iuri drops Rivera, but he gets right up and dumps Alcantara on his butt. Iuri is up before the bell but eats a few shots first. 10-9 Rivera.

Round 3 – High kick attempt from Iuri. He makes Rivera whiff on a leg kick attempt. Straight right from Rivera, and almost takes Iuri’s head off with a right hook right behind it. Right to the body from Rivera. Hard body kick from Iuri. Rivera catches a kick and lands a right before dumping Iuri. He’s back up. Left from Rivera. He ducks a high kick. Rivera pressing. Right to the head and body from Rivera. Body kick from Iuri. Front kick to the body from Alcantara. Rivera connects wit a punch combo, finishing with a left hook. Hard inside low kick from Rivera. Iuri trips Rivera and lands a punch on the way down. He’s right up and goes for a single on Iuri. 10 seconds to go. Rivera lets it go and they exchange punches until the bell. 10-9 Rivera.

Josh Barnett vs. Ben Rothwell

Round 1 – Rothwell pressing with a pawing front hand. Body kick. Hard right from Barnett momentarily stuns Ben. Inside leg kick from Rothwell. Jab from Josh, body jab. Jab again from Josh. Inside leg kick from Rothwell. They tie up briefly. Leg kick from Barnett. Rothwell, switching stances, lands a low kick. Rothwell looking for an uppercut. Barnett has Ben’s nose busted up a bit. Ben pushes him to the cage briefly and backs out. Body jab from Josh, then a quick straight left. Jab from Barnett. Inside leg kick from Rothwell. Barnett continues with the jabs, busting Ben up. 10-9 Barnett.

Round 2 – Clinched, Barnett pushes Rothwell to the cage. Couple uppercuts in the clinch from Ben. Inside leg kick fro Rothwell. Uppercut from Rothwell. Ben getting loose with his punches now. Overhand right from Barnett. He goes for another bigger one and just misses. Body kick from Barnett. Jab from Josh. Ben pressing with punches, Barnett looks for a single. Ben locks up his neck and submits Josh Barnett with a guillotine and chokes Barnett until he taps out. That’s the first REAL submission loss from Barnett. He was submitted once by punches and once by shoulder injury, both times to Mirko Cro Cop in Pride. This is a huge win for Ben.

Anthony Johnson vs. Ryan Bader

Round 1 – Bader shoots right away, stuffed. Johnson has him down now as Bader looks for a kimura. Johnson gets to full mount and Bader is trapped against the cage. Bader gives up his back, Johnson flattens him out and pounds him unconscious. Dammmm. Bad mistake from Bader. Quick work from “Rumble”.
