Eddie Alvarez was hyped beyond belief before arriving in the UFC. He was in a now infamous contract dispute with Bellator and it seemed his best days were passing him by while he was tied up in the incident. They finally let him go, but he lost to Cowboy Cerrone in his first UFC fight before winning two split decisions in a row against Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis.

The victories were over two former champions and some think Eddie should be next in line for a shot at the winner of the upcoming champ vs. champ match between featherweight king Conor McGregor and lightweight champ Rafael Dos Anjos. Eddie isn’t quite sure.

Here’s what Eddie told MMAJunkie.com

When I signed with Lorenzo (Fertitta) and Dana (White), I simply told them I would like the best guys you guys have in the division. I didn’t want top-15 (guys). I wasn’t looking to try to show the fans something I wasn’t. I wanted the best guys. They’ve been giving me the best guys. To be honest, I don’t know what I deserve and stuff. It’s up to the boss man here. Whoever they give me, that’s who we’re going after. But hopefully it’s for the title. I’d love, love, love a shot at the title.

Does he deserve the shot? Normally Dana wants decisive victories over quality opponents. Split decisions are often not enough to get you in the title picture no matter who you beat. If Alvarez gets his shot can he really beat the man who crushed the guy who defeated him in his UFC welcome bout?

What do you think?

  1. No title shot…not fighting like he has in his last two fights….he just hugging and not looking to fight…just control….personally…I’d say Tony Ferguson deserves a title fight more than Alvarez…or maybe they should fight for the number one contender spot…or let him fight Khabib and take that L….if Khabib could ever get healthy…lol…
