joe rogan first ufc appearanceWhen you think back on epic UFC moments inside the Octagon, you will likely hear color commentator Joe Rogan‘s voice in your head. He’s synonymous with some of the greatest fights that have ever taken place on this planet and has been passionately calling mixed martial arts action at its highest level for more than a decade.

But in a new interview with Rolling Stone Rogan revealed he actually worked his first 15 or so UFC events for free.

The first time Dana White called him about doing the UFC’s color commentary, Rogan tried to beg off. This was in 2002. “I just want to go to the fights and drink,” he told White. But White persevered and eventually got Rogan for free, in exchange for prime fight tickets for him and his friends. Fifteen or so gratis gigs later, Rogan went on the UFC payroll and has been there ever since.

It’s obvious that Rogan is passionate about martial arts and that explains why he was willing to work for free in the beginning. Now 13 years later the man has etched himself into the consciousness of MMA fans the world over.
