ufc fight night 62“UFC Fight Night 62: Maia vs. LaFlare” takes place this evening in Rio de Janeiro and features No. 7 ranked welterweight Demian Maia taking on No. 14 ranked Ryan LaFlare in the main event. Also, Josh Koscheck makes a quick turnaround to face fellow welterweight Erick Silva in the co-headliner.

UFC Fight Night 62 round-by-round updates:

Andre Fili vs. Godofredo Pepey

Round 1 – Pepey muscles a takedown but Fili is right back up and presses him to the corner. Pepey jumps on a triangle. It’s tight but Fili survives for quite some time. Pepey readjusts but is unable to finish. He readjusts again, pulls down on the head and Fili taps out. The submission attempt lasted maybe 2 minutes total if not longer.

Gilbert Burns vs. Alex Oliveira

Round 1 – Nothing too significant here except a nice right from Oliveira at one point.

Round 2 – Crowd boos a clinch game from Burns as he searches for a takedown. Burns scores with a couple punches. Uppercut from Oliveira. Inside leg kick from Burns. Body shot from Oliveira, he presses Burns to the cage with 30 seconds to go and they remain there for the rest of the round.

Round 3 – Burns gets a takedown and full mount early. Burns locks up a tight omoplata. Oliveira defending well. For some ungodly reason the crowd boos. Oliveira escapes finally but is mounted by Burns who goes for an armbar, first belly down, then off his back and Oliveira taps finally.

Shayna Baszler vs. Amanda Nunes

Round 1 – No footwork from Baszler and she pays for it with leg kicks from Nunes. Front kick and a right left from Nunes backs Baszler up. She shoots but Nunes escapes. Another leg kick, punch combo, then another leg kick seems to injure Baszler’s leg and she goes down writhing in pain. The ref tries to hold Nunes back but she lands several unnecessary shots.

Tony Martin vs. Leonardo Santos

Round 1 – Inside leg kick from Santos. Again. Another. Body jab from Martin. Right counter. He checks the next leg strike attempt. Right from Santos. Jab and takedown attempt from Martin, presses Santos to the cage. Martin gets the takedown but Santos is right back up being pressed to the cage. Ref separates them. Leg kick from Martin. Right hand. Another, leg kick. Clinch for the last 30 seconds or so.

Round 2 – Santos scores a trip takedown about 90 seconds in. He takes full mount, Martin gives up his back, Santos with both hooks in and looking for the choke and Martin taps out.

Josh Koscheck vs. Erick Silva

Round 1 – I’ll be very surprised if Koscheck wins this fight. Kos comes out aggressive with a right hand and forces the shot from Silva. Stuffed. Kos puts him to the cage and lands an elbow to the face. Body lock from Kos looking for the takedown. Ref separates them after a stalemate. Kos swings big with the overhand right but misses. Front kick then a straight left from Silva drops Koscheck. Kos looks for a leg but Silva defends and ends up inside Kos’s full guard. Nice right from Silva, but Kos is back to this feet. Left from Silva knocks Kos back. Kos swings and misses. Big body kick from Silva, inside leg kick. Kos is hesitating now. Head kick attempt from Kos, it’s blocked. He’s swinging hard but missing the big one. Kos taking it to him but missing a lot. Silva tags him with some big punches and it forces the shot from Kos. Silva jumps on a guillotine and chokes him unconscious although he also tapped on his way out. Two straight submission losses for Kos in a row. Not good. Now 5 losses in a row. Kos was looking pretty good for a minute and throwing bombs but just couldn’t find the mark.

Demian Maia vs. Ryan LaFlare

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Southpaw vs. Southpaw. They trade punches early, LaFlare seemed to get the better of it. Left from LaFlare. Shot and takedown from Maia. On top in half guard. Not good for LaFlare. LaFlare tries to explode out and almost gets his back taken. Maia heavy on top in half guard and moves to full mount. LaFlare tries to buck out and succeeds as Maia goes back to half guard. LaFlare using a half butterfly guard with under a minute to go in the round. Maia ends the round on top.

Round 2 – LaFlare stuffs a takedown. Left from Maia. Leg kick from LaFlare. Takedown from Maia. Maia to full mount after some work with just over a minute to go. Maia looks for an arm triangle but is forced to let it go. Maia postures up in full mount with a couple punches before the bell.

Round 3 – Left hand from LaFlare, leg kick. Leg kick. Another. Maia shoots but LaFlare escapes. Leg kick from Maia. Leg kick LaFlare. Maia shoots, stuffed and LaFlare puts Maia on his back. Maia is able to use his legs to trip LaFlare and take full mount. No damage from Maia but he’s controlling from top.

Round 4 – Right counter from Maia. Another right. Left from Maia, he shoots and gets a body lock takedown. LaFlare looks at a kimura briefly. Full mount again from Maia. Maia locks up an arm triangle but LaFlare is able to defend and survive the round.

Round 5 – LaFlare is able to stuff a few takedown attempts and is getting off with some strikes as Maia looks to be tiring. Maia goes for another takedown and looks to have it but LaFlare ends up on top in side mount. He lets Maia up. Maia shoots and takes a knee to the chest. LaFlare makes him get up. Jab from Maia and his shot is stuffed again. Two minutes to go. LaFlare makes him get up. Couple body kicks and a jab. Big left on the button from Maia. Maia gets a takedown, eating a knee on the way in. He passes to side mount with under a minute to go. LaFlare fighting to get up but Maia staying heavy. LaFlare escapes to his feet with 10 seconds to go. Maia flops to his back before the bell and referee John McCarthy takes a point from him after warning him earlier.

  1. I’m honestly not sure who most of these people are.

    I know who Meia and Koscheck are.
    Maia is one of the also ran shlubs who made up Andersons amazing career.
    And it seems to me that Koscheck really isn’t into this anymore.
    Even if the back of his mind hasn’t convinced the rest of it yet.
