“UFC 185: Pettis vs. Dos Anjos” takes place this evening (Saturday, March 14, 2015) from American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. The main event sees UFC lightweight champ Anthony “Showtime” Pettis putting his belt on the line against No. 1 contender Rafael dos Anjos. And in the co-headliner UFC women’s strawweight champ Carla Esparza defends her title for the first time against unbeaten Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

UFC 185 play-by-play:

Jared Rosholt vs. Josh Copeland

Round 1 – After a feeling out period Copeland lands a big right, but Rosholt lands an even bigger right and Copeland stands firm. Another right hand by Copeland hurts Rosholt coming in. Copeland smells blood but Rosholt is able to tie him up against the cage. Some dirty boxing before the bell. Pretty close round but Copeland probably got it.

Round 2 – Right from Rosholt after having his takedown attempt stuffed. Right from Rosholt. Body kick from Rosholt. Body punch from Copeland after Rosholt lands a knee. Rosholt dumps Copeland on his head then traps him against the cage where he works ground and pound. 10-9 Rosholt. Should be even going into the third.

Round 3 – Copeland lands a couple uppercuts inside before Rosholt takes him down again and has side mount. Rosholt traps an arm and lands some big shots. Rosholt lands some mean elbows and punches until the referee stops it. Copeland couldn’t get anything going from the bottom.

Daron Cruickshank vs. Beneil Dariush

Round 1 – Body kick and a couple inside leg kicks from Dariush. Head kick from Cruickshank. Dariush fires back with a knee in the clinch. Big body kick from Dariush. Hard left kick to the body from Dariush. Inside leg kick from Cruickshank, punch combo, then a spinning back kick all score. Big leg kick from Cruickshank but Dariush delivers two big body kicks, then a left counter. Big leg kick from Dariush, Front leg round kick to the face from Cruickshank, then a jumping knee as Dariush shoots in. Dariush still gets the takedown and is landing ground and pound from half guard. Goes for a D’arce before the bell. 10-9 Dariush.

Round 2 – Dariush scores with a couple punches and a body kick. Cruickshank looking for the takedown but Dariush defends. Cruickshank goes for another takedown, Dariush puts a knee to his chest and takes Cruickshank’s back with both hooks in. Cruickshank goes for the escape, Dariush goes for his arm, then gets his back with a body triangle locked on. Dariush locks in the rear-naked choke and Cruickshank taps out.

Elias Theodorou vs. Roger Narvaez

Round 1 – Theodorou presses Narvaez to the cage, lands a knee. High kick from Theodorou. Inside leg kick from Theodorou. Counter right hook from Narvaez. Another counter from Narvaez. Kick goes low from Theodorou. Body kick from Theodorou. Leg kick from Narvaez. They trade kicks before the bell. Close round. Nothing too significant.

Round 2 – Nice body kick from Theodorou and then a takedown. Theodorou inside full guard. Narvaez makes his way back up. Theodorou turns it up with kicks as Narvaez begins to fade. Theodrou takes him down. Narvaez turtles up as Theodorou pounds on him until the ref is forced to stop it.

Ross Pearson vs. Sam Stout

Round 1 – Leg kick from Stout, Pearson finding a home for his punches. Uppercut to the body from Stout. Quick inside leg kick from Pearson, and a left hook follows. Left body kick from Stout. Another. Another. Left hook from Pearson and another body kick from Stout. Nice leg kick. Left hook from Stout. Jab from Pearson and an uppercut. Right hand from Stout, clinch, knee. Nice punch combo from Stout. Left from Pearson before the bell. Close round.

Round 2 – Couple leg kicks from Pearson. After a few exchanges Pearson lands a left hook that puts Stout on his back. Pearson lands a right hand while standing over Stout and this fight is over.

Chris Cariaso vs. Henry Cejudo

Round 1 – Cariaso with a leg kick, clinch and a knee from Cejudo, then the takedown. Cejudo controlling fron top as Cariaso gets to his knees. Knee to the body from Cejudo. Low kick from Cariaso. Cejudo presses him to the cage, lands a couple knees. Superman punch and a high kick from Cejudo. Cejudo controls from the clinch and stays busy with knees and punches for much of the rest of the round. 10-9 Cejudo.

Round 2 – Right from Cejudo, he clinches and pushes Cariaso to the cage before scoring a takedown. Cejudo continues to control the fight with takedowns and clinch work with Cariaso landing the occasional kick or punch. 10-9 Cejudo.

Round 3 – More of the same with Cejudo controlling the action. He attempts a neck crank before the bell and Cariaso goes for a leg. Cejudo’s striking looked great considering wrestling is his bread and butter. However, he also has the distinction of being the first winner on tonight’s card to go the distance. Six takedowns total from Cejudo in this fight. Cejudo gave himself a “D” rating after the fight and said he wanted to knock him out.

Roy Nelson vs. Alistair Overeem

Round 1 – Low kick to the knee from Overeem. Jumping knee from Overeem. Overeem blocks an overhand right from Roy. Couple leg kicks from Overeem. Right from Overeem. One two from Roy. Leg kick from Overeem and a knee to the body. Oblique kick and flying knee to the chin from Overeem. Roy eats it and backs Overeem to the cage with big punch combinations. Overeem covers up and waits it out. Alistair fires back with low kicks, punches and knees, but staying patient and picking shots. Knee and kick to the body from Overeem. Low kick. Another knee to the body. 10-9 Overeem.

Round 2 – Front kick from Overeem. Low kick. Overhand right from Roy partially blocked. Overeem fires back with punches and knees. Roy checks the next leg kick. Roy hurts Overeem with a right. Body kick from Overeem. Left hook from Overeem. Front kick. Roy chases Overeem and the crowd boos the evasive technique of the Dutchman. Overeem goes for a takedown and almost gets it. Knee and kick to the body from Overeem. Nelson backs him to the cage with uppercuts to the body. Overeem covers up. Flying knee and a left hook from Overeem. Front kick. Nelson thinks about a takedown before the bell. 10-9 Overeem.

Round 3 – Roy takes a timeout after a knee to the groin that knocked him to the ground. Right from Roy. Quick body kick from Overeem. Roy connects with punches that stun Overeem. Nelson pushes him to the cage then backs out. Right hook from Roy after Overeem misses. Head kick from Overeem wobbles Big Country. High kick then a low kick from Overeem. Front kick from Overeem, overhand right. Body kick. Side kick from Overeem. Flying knee from Overeem connects to the chin. Low kick from Roy. A left hook from Roy knocks Overeem down with 20 seconds left in the round. Roy wants to finish but Overeem gets up and Roy is looking for the takedown. 10-9 Nelson.

Johny Hendricks vs. Matt Brown

Round 1 – Right hook from Hendricks, and he picks Brown up for the slam. Brown back up though and is back in Johny’s face. He goes for a bodylock takedown but Brown defends it, briefly. Now back on his back, Hendricks inside full guard. Brown showing good defense off his back, he goes for a leg and scrambles to his feet with just under two minutes to go. Elbows and a knee from Brown in the clinch. Hendricks picks him up for another slam and Brown locks on his neck. Hendricks puts him down slowly and gets free of the would be choke attempt. Hendricks finishes on top as Brown gets to a knee. 10-1 Hendricks.

Round 2 – Takedown from Hendricks but Brown is right back up. Hendricks lands a punch combo then picks Brown up for another takedown straight into side control. Hendricks controlling from inside guard. Ref stands them up around the two minute mark. Hendricks with a nice leg kick and punch combinations. Hendricks mixing it up and scores another takedown — his fifth of the fight. Brown gets back to his feet. Eats hooks from Hendricks but is right back in his face, just in time for another takedown. 10-9 Hendricks.

Round 3 – Hendricks slips but is right back up and scores a takedown. Brown gets to his feet, briefly looks for an inverted triangle. Back to the feet and Hendricks lands a hook, then a takedown. Brown has continually grabbed the fence on several takedowns tonight. After a scramble Hendricks is back on top in side mount. Brown lands some hard shots off his back. Brown looking for a triangle but Hendricks is able to control Brown and prevent him from getting anything going off his back. 10-9 Hendricks.

Carla Esparza vs. Joanna Jędrzejczyk

Round 1 – Carla with a vacant all business death stare. No emotion. Carla with lots of feints and level changes. Carla goes for the single, sprawl from Joanna and lands an elbow before the break. They square up again. She shoots again, grabs a single and stays on it and finally gets her down. Can’t do anything with it though as Joanna is back up. Knee and a right on the break from Carla. Carla with another takedown. Nice elbow from Joanna staggers Carla as they are back to the feet. Joanna stuffs another takedown. Lands a nice right. Big right from Joanna. Overhand right from Joanna. Carla shoots again after getting tagged a few times. Joanna with a knee on the way up after stuffing it. It looks like only a matter of time before Carla goes to sleep. Joanna beating her up badly on the feet and has to escape engagement before the bell. 10-9 Jedrzejczyk. Joanna’s corner tells her Carla is gassed out.

Round 2 – Joanna getting off with punches and it forces the shot from Carla. Stuffed again. Elbow from Joanna. Carla isn’t even throwing punches at this point. She looks lost. Joanna lands a big punch combo on Carla’s chin. Joanna picking her apart. Carla shoots from way outside, stuffed. This could be stopped and no one would mind. It’s very one-sided. Joanna stuffs another one and is all over Carla with punches. Desperation takedown attempts from Carla. Big right hand from Joanna. Then she Chuck Liddells her with a huge punch combo and Carla is done. Ref steps in. Amazing!

Anthony Pettis vs. Rafael dos Anjos

Round 1 – No glove touching here. High kick from Pettis blocked. Body kick from RDA. Big left from dos Anjos snaps Pettis’ head back. Pettis did not like that at all. Body shot from dos Anjos. Big body kick from dos Anjos. High kick from Pettis. Flying knee. Big body kick and left hand from dos Anjos. Body kick from RDA, jab. Big left hook to the body from RDA. Right from Pettis. Body kick from Pettis. Left right from RDA, body kick. Another body kick. Big inside leg kick from RDA. Punch combo from Pettis as they bang it out in the pocket. Lots of pressure from RDA and he snaps in a quick takedown just under the one minute mark. Pettis gets to his feet before the bell but pays for it with a couple elbows. 10-9 RDA.

Round 2 – Inside leg kick from RDA. Left from dos Anjos. He backs Pettis to the cage with underhooks now and landing knees to the legs. Body kick from Pettis. Inside leg kick from RDA. Pettis lands a nice punch combo. Takedown from RDA, inside Pettis’ full guard. Pettis bleeding now over his eye. RDA working the ground and pound effectively. Pettis unable to get anything going at all from bottom and stays there for the rest of the round. 10-8 dos Anjos.

Round 3 – Dos Anjos’ corner wants pressure and elbows. They trade leg kicks. Leg kick again from RDA. Left from RDA knocks Pettis back a bit. An eye poke from Pettis forces a timeout. Leg kick RDA. Head kick from Pettis. RDA eats it and keeps moving forward. High kick from RDa is blocked. Leg kick and a takedown from RDA. He’s getting takedowns at will. Pettis gets to his feet around the 2 minute mark. Dos Anjos still on him against the cage with knees and punches. Pettis with a head kick as they square back up. RDA on him with punches and yet another takedown. Pettis checking the clock with 1 minute to go. Pettis gets up but is taken right back down. RDA ends the round with some serious ground and pound while riding Pettis’ back. 10-9 dos Anjos.

Round 4 – Left to the body, right over the top combo from RDA. Couple of big body kicks from Pettis. Right and a left from RDA, and he dumps Pettis on his back again. RDA looking to set up a kimura but Pettis defends it. RDA whips around and takes Pettis’ back with both hooks in. Pettis spins and gets to his feet, takes RDA down but he pops right back up. RDA presses him to the cage with underhooks and gets a trip takedown. Pettis gets up but pays for it by eating punches and kicks. Pettis’ coach tells him he needs a KO. Pettis told him he couldn’t see out of his eye. Coach says I know go win anyway.

Round 5 – They trade body kicks. Body and leg kick from RDA. He dumps Pettis again for his 8th takedown of the fight. Pettis gets to his feet with just over 2 minutes left. Jumping knee and another takedown. He’s finished now 9 of his 10 takedown attempts. Pettis makes an attempt at a kimura. RDA takes his back with the body triangle and looks for the choke but Pettis defends. But RDA is the new UFC lightweight champion.
