This trailer was one of the most anticipated of 2014 and it lived up to the hype for the most part. You had Tony Stark in the Hulkbuster armor, which had been rumored and discussed for months. Cool as that may be, there are many ominous moments foreshadowing a darker, grittier Marvel movie. This would be surprising if one hadn’t viewed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, a masterpiece in its own right. The second Cap film was very dark, emotional, and showed the thin line that SHIELD walks. The point is that in this Avengers movie someone has to die and it has to be tragic. Ultron is insanely tough, and brilliant to match so this movie will show The Avengers pushed to their limits.

Here are 6 six crazy theories of what might happen in the film.

1. Captain America dies, sacrifices himself.

This is a common theory I would guess. In the movie it appears that Cap is laying next to his broken shield on a scorched earth looking setting. Of all of the Avengers in the Marvel movies so far it’s Captain America that has been the conscience and morality of them all. He dove on a grenade he thought was live in the Captain America: The First Avenger film, told Tony Stark he wasn’t “the guy to make the sacrifice play” obviously meaning that an act like that is second nature to Steve Rogers himself. His death would tear the team apart emotionally and give them something to Avenge, a “push” as Nick Fury called Agent Coulson’s death . Black Widow is shown in a scene staring mournfully at something, potentially a place special to her because of her romantic interest in Steve Rogers.

Imagine the sorrow and panic America would have, the world would have if the symbol of freedom was extinguished.

2. Ultron coats himself in Vibranium and breaks Captain America’s shield.

In the trailer it appears Ultron is covering himself in molten metal. There is only one metal referenced in Marvel movies that is even more rare than the adamantium metal that coated Wolverine’s skeleton, and it is called vibranium. This is the metal that Captain America’s shield is made of and it would take the same metal to break it in half. Vibranium deadens the impact of crushing blows, weapons, and in Winter Soldier a long fall out of a building. It makes sense for the sentient peacekeeping robot to seek it out, and that Ultron would then be able to damage Cap’s shield and show that the earth truly is not safe anymore.

3. Tony Stark reforms Captain America’s shield from Ultron’s metal, possibly to give it to Bucky Barnes.

Should Captain America die as we hypothesized before there is only one logical replacement. Cap’s childhood friend Bucky Barnes took up the mantle in certain Marvel story line arcs so it’s not out of the question. In Winter Soldier, Bucky returns and it is revealed that being experimented on by Red Skull’s personal mad scientist Arnim Zola was not entirely a bad thing. When Barnes presumably falls to his death in Cap’s first movie he somehow survived, received a cyborg type arm giving him incredible strength, and potentially received some super soldier abilities.

In the end credit scenes of Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes is at the Smithsonian Captain America exhibit after realizing who Cap was, and saving his best friend. He then apparently realizes how close he really was to Rogers from visiting a memorial piece honoring Bucky, foreshadowing an appearance in Avengers 2. Bucky could take up the mantle and the reformation of Captain America’s symbolic shield would ensure it remained a symbol of freedom to the USA.

4. Nick Fury finally dies, Hawkeye steps up to take the lead, or Hawkeye is the one killed not Captain America.

In the comics, Hawkeye was the leader of the West Coast Avengers. Jeremy Renner brought the Hawkeye from the Ultimate Avengers to life in Thor’s first film before popping up as main role in the first Avengers film. Nick Fury is the strong, unwavering force that pushed SHIELD to the forefront of world security organizations. Hawkeye is a leader, a natural fit as a replacement since he has been with the agency for a long time. Let’s keep in mind though that SHIELD as we know it is gone.

In Winter Soldier it is revealed that the evil HYDRA organization is still alive and kicking even after their leader was sucked in to another universe by the Tesseract artifact. When Black Widow, Nick Fury, Falcon, and Captain America take down HYDRA they dissolve SHIELD along with HYDRA leaving their futures unstable. If Hawkeye takes up the role it would not surprise us.

Then again, the friendship between Natasha and Clint Barton, Black Widow and Hawkeye is a fierce one. In the Avengers it is alluded to several times that they have a history of working together in a military sense. This might also explain Black Widow’s solitary, somber scene staring at something might also mean Hawkeye has died. Marvel has a way of making us think one thing before swerving the other direction. Captain America’s broken shield may be that swerve.

Hawkeye died in the comics. Just saying.

5. Odin is dead, and Thor returns to Asgard to rule, killing Loki in the process.

Thor needs a new enemy for his third movie. After constantly quarreling with his adopted brother in Thor: The Dark World, and eventually The Avengers. It is implied that something has happened to Odin at the end of Dark World when Loki poses as Thor’s father on the throne. Thor is none the wiser and Loki has potentially usurped the throne causing mischief as only he can. In the trailer, Thor looks like he is in great pain, or enraged flying up shirtless from a pool of water. That could mean a lot of things: he got owned by Ultron’s minions, the “comeback” scene in every movie is starting, or he’s plain pissed off.

Rumors have been circulating that Thor will kill Loki for years, but they are on fire now with the upcoming release of Age of Ultron and the probable appearance of Tom Hiddleston as Loki. It’s a long shot, but in the current storyline he will eventually return to Asgard so why not at or near the end of the movie?

Do you have any theories?
