Well, technology is amazing. Scientists say that they have successfully grown penises in a lab. The work is being carried out the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, North Carolina. Earlier this year, the same team of researchers declared they had successfully grown vaginas in a laboratory and implanted them into four teenage patients. One can only assume that they were necessary due to injuries sustained and not sex changes. They did list some reasons and it does seem like they are legit and not just to garner attention to their programs.
According to their reports, organs would be given to men with congenital abnormalities, or those who have undergone radical surgery for cancer or suffered trauma to the area. Engineered penises are now being tested for ‘safety, function and durability’. Imagine how you would test that. Your mind goes straight to the gutter doesn’t it.
There are many causes around the world, but we can’t think of one specifically that requires researchers to harvest sexual organs from cells. Science is an amazing thing and sometimes just plain weird!
