UFC officials have announced that former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will return from a near three year layoff to face Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178 on September 27.
The UFC 178 event will be headlined by the much anticipated rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and challenger Alexander Gustafsson.
Cruz (19-1) hasn’t competed since defending his UFC bantamweight title against Demetrious Johnson in October 2011. Cruz has been sidelined with multiple knee injuries and ultimately had to vacant his title due to being unable to defend. Cruz has had two ACL surgeries and suffered a torn groin muscle in preparation for several fights.
Mizugaki (20-7-2) is coming off a unanimous decision win over Francisco Rivera in his last outing at UFC 173. Mizugaki has rattled off five consecutive wins since November 2012.
We reported earlier today that a middleweight bout between Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romero has also been added to the UFC 178 lineup.
