UFC officials have announced a lightweight scrap for the upcoming UFC 173 card that’s set for May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner has verbally agreed to face former TUF contender James Krause.

The UFC 173 event will be headlined by the UFC middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman and challenger Vitor Belfort.

Varner (21-9-1, 2NC) is coming off a “Fight of the Night” performance in a KO loss to Abel Trujillo at UFC 169. Varner has dropped three of his last four bouts since returning to the UFC and scoring a huge upset win over previously undefeated Edson Barboza.

Krause (20-5) is coming off a unanimous decision loss against Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night 31. Krause was coming off a successful UFC debut with a unanimous decision win over UFC veteran Sam Stout.
