The action kicks off at 7 p.m. ET on UFC Fight Pass, moving to FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET, then on to the main card on PPV at 10 p.m. ET. UFC 170 play-by-play:

125 lbs: Zach Makovsky vs. Josh Sampo

Round 1 – Gary Thomas in for Jack Bratcher as he slacks on his duties. Fighters touch gloves and  here we go. Sampo leads with a kick. Fun size rushes in trying to get a feel of things.  Makovsky gets a kick off of his own. Leg kick by Sampo and Makovsky shoots in for a single leg to get Sampo down. Sampo working a little mission control to slow Zach down. Makovsky up briefly and gets back into some guard work. Makovsky is working decent control but Sampo is active from his back. Makovsky stands and lands a big shot coming back in. Sampo still showing some life from the bottom. Sampo looking for some upkicks then gets on his feet. High kick from Makovsky but checked. Sampo lands a couple shots. Sampo shoots, kinda, and backs off. Inside leg kick from Sampo and a good knee to the body from Makovsky. I’ve got it 10-9 Makovsky.

Round 2 -Kick  by Makovsky to start the second stanza. Right hand by Makovsky before he slips back. Sampo a swing and a miss. Zach locks in a single leg but both back up. Sampo rushes in. Knee by Makovsky. Makovsky gets another takedown. A little blood coming from the nose of Sampo. Sampo sits up and has a weak guillotine on Makovsky but is more trying to slow him down. Zach in some side control and then back up. Sampo kicking from his back but Zach gets a good left hand to land. We reset on the feet. Leg kick by Makovsky. A short exchange as Sampo looks to be a little more energized. Half a minute to go as they bounce around. Makovsky scores another takedown. Sampo looking for a submission though as the round ends. Calling this one for Makovsky as well. I have it 20-18 Makovsky.

Round 3 – Sampo comes out swinging. He needs to finish the fight. A missed kick from Sampo. Makovsky is fast and elusive. Zach lands a leg kick. Makovsky gets pushed down as Sampo gets his turn for the first time to work from the top position. Sampo working to keep Makovsky down. After a struggle, Makovsky gets up. With 90 seconds to go Sampo showing no sense of urgency. Makovsky gets another single leg that will probably cement the round for him. Makovsky staying busy with body shots as Sampo really has nothing. They get  to the feet with 10 seconds to go but the round ends. 30-27 “Fun Size” all day.  Going to the judges.

135 lbs: Cody Gibson vs. Aljamain Sterling

Round 1 – I think Brittney Palmer just waved at me. This should be a good one as Sterling lands a front kick to Gibson’s face. Gibson tries a spinning kick but is off the mark. Sterling shoots in but can’t finish. Gibson gets Sterling against the cage but can’t get anything out of it. Gibson resets and then gets the take down. Sterling gets up to his feet with Gibson hanging on for dear life. Sterling off the mark with a head kick. Sterling gets Gibson down. Gibson has a body triangle as Sterling starts with some body shots. A short scramble as Sterling gets to his feet. The reset towareds the center of the cage. Gibson throws heat but misses. Sterling pushes Gibson against the cage and sneaks in some knees. More knees from Aljamain Sterling. He drops as if he wanted a take down but doesn’t pursue it. Round ends as Sterling lands a few more shots. Good fight so far. I see it 10-9 Sterling.

Round 2 – Sterling leads with a left hand. A few kicks from each that haven’t went anywhere. Gibson has Sterling’s back against the cage. They trade some knees in the clinch. Gibson working the ribs of Sterling. Gibson wants a takedown and gets it. They get up but Gibson dumps him again. Momentum is shifting now. Sterling wants up but Gibson won’t let him. Gibson gets the back but Sterling escapes out. He finds himself against the cage again though but reverses positions. Sterling lands a knee to the midsection. They break and start back in the center of the cage. Sterling goes to spin but pays for it as he gets dropped by Gibson. They get up and Sterling drops Gibson but lands into a guillotine. Tight? Not really but its in there for a minute. Round ends with Sterling on top. I have it even after 2 with this round going to Gibson. 19-19.

Round 3 – Sterling pushing the pace and gets a take down 30 seconds into the round. Sterling working from the top. Sterling working on a choke. Gibson looks limp but starts to move his legs. The get back up to the feet. Sterling gets a takedown and has top position. Gibson sneaks in a couple elbows to the dome. Sterling grinding away with two minutes left to go. Sterling gets a couple body shots but Gibson is looking at the ref wanting a stand up. Sterling now working the ribs like a side job. Sterling gets Gibson’s back and is dropping some shots working his way to a submission attempt. Gibson has wrist control but Aljamain gets a rear naked choke in. Gibson is rolling away and breaks it but Sterling is still on his back landing shots. Great round from Sterling that should get him the win. I have it 29-28 Sterling.

135 lbs: Pedro Munhoz vs. Raphael Assuncao

Round 1 –  A strong feeling out process. Munhoz has a mean kick that he keeps going back to. Assuncao is being patient and letting it rip when he can. Assuncao is being elusive but Munhoz show no signs he is going to let up. Assuncao has a stong kick that is partially checked by Pedro. Munhoz pushing forward but is losing the striking battle. Another kick by Munhoz. They trade kicks and Raphael lands a good combination pushing Munhoz back. A minute to go. Left hand by Assuncao. He checks a Munhoz leg kick. Munhoz will not let up and it might cost him. Assuncao takes this round 10-9.

Round 2 – Assuncao starts with a kick. Raphael looking sharp to start the second stanza. Munhoz giving zero care as he moves forward. Assuncao keeping Munhoz at a distance with some push kicks. Munhoz tries a heel hook but too weak as Assuncao drops some bombs.  Both guys on their feet as the crowd wakes up a little. Munhoz STILL pressing the action. Love it. Kick to the weiner but Munhoz is ok. Elbow to the dome from Assuncao. Back to back kicks from Assuncao. Inside leg kick lands as well. Little ground action so far, just a ton of kicks. Munhoz misses the mark on a kick and pays for it by getting dropped. Assuncao on top inside Munhoz’s guard. Assuncao landing at will. Assuncao gets a slam. Munhoz is avoiding major damage but is losing points. Munhoz has a body triangle in but Assuncao gets out and lands more shots from the top as the round ends. Another one for Assuncao. 20-18.

Round 3 – Munhoz still pressing forward. Assuncao lands a couple decent shots from close range. Munhoz answers with a shot the midsection. Assuncao really looks to be trying to coast and conserve energy. Munhoz closing off the cage until Assuncao bursts forward. The reset to the middle of the octagon. Left eye of Munhoz is swelling up. Munhoz aggressive but can’t find an opening. Two minutes to go and this has been all stand up in round 3. A graphic says significant strikes is at 90-3 in favor of Assuncao.  Last minute of the fight and Assuncao lands a kick. Munhoz jumps in but catches an elbow. A takedown attempt does nothing as Munhoz pushes the pace. This has been strange. The round ends  with Assuncao on top. I have it 30-27 Assuncao.

135 lbs: Alexis Davis vs. Jessica Eye

Round 1 – Leg kick Davis. Eye lands a nice punch combo. They tie up against the cage as Eye presses on her. Dirty boxing from Eye as Davis tries for a Thai plum. Eye backs out with punches, leg kick from Davis. Left hand from Eye. Front kick to the face from Davis. Eye ties her up to the cage again. Davis tries for a trip, no dice. Ref separates them. Leg kick inside from Davis. Outside leg kick. They tie up, dirty boxing exchanges. Leg kick Davis. They tie up. Davis presses her to the cage. Knees from Davis to the bread basket. Right hand from Eye on the break. Leg kick Eye. Again. Leg kick inside from Davis. Davis shoots and gets the takedown, takes side mount. Eye recovers half guard. Davis drops a couple quick elbows. PMN sees it 10-9 Davis.

Round 2 – Leg kick Davis. Leg kick Eye inside, followed by an elbow and punch. Davis catches a kick and puts Eye on her back where she takes top control in half guard. Eye tying her up pretty good preventing much damage. Davis lands a couple short elbows. Davis landing some ground and pound; punches to head and body. Boos from the crowd at the stalemate. Hammerfists from Davis force Eye to try and make something happen. Nothing happens except more hammerfists. PMN sees it 10-9 Davis.

Round 3 – Left jab counter from Eye, leg kick. Leg kick Davis. Leg kick Davis again. Front kick to the thigh. Leg kick Davis. Counter left and right from Eye. She lands another right. Davis shoots, stuffed. Leg kick Davis. Again. Jab. Front kick. Leg kick Eye. Jab. Right counter. Jab from Davis. Dirty boxing in the pocket from both. Eye got the better of it though. Eye has caught several of Davis’ kicks but doesn’t capitalize. Jab from Davis. Leg kick exchange. Another leg kick from Eye. Jab. Jab from Eye, again. Right hand. Exchange in the pocket. Right hand from Eye.  PMN sees the round 10-9 for Eye but the fight 29-28 for Davis.

170 lbs: Stephen Thompson vs. Robert Whittaker

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Left jab from Whittaker. Leg kick from Thompson. Whittaker with leg kick in return. Thompson catches a body kick. Delivers a body kick of his own, leg kick, right hand. Slips a right from Whittaker. Axe kick from Thompson to the face. Left right from Thomspon. Left hook Whittaker. Left right left from Thompson. Again. Whittaker connects with a punch. Leg kick Thompson. Left right Thompson. Nice uppercut from Thompson. Side kick from Thompson. Left right scores. Left jab from Whittaker. Left to the body from Thompson. Left jab Whittaker. Again. Left right follows. Thompson with that low-hand karate stance. He hurts Whittaker with  a couple nice punches, dropping him both times. Thompson stays on him and finishes him off until the ref stops it. Big win for Thompson.

170 lbs: Mike Pyle vs. TJ Waldburger

Round 1 – Big leg kick from Waldburger. Leg kick Pyle. TJ checks a leg kick. Leg kick Pyle. They trade leg kicks now. Thai plum and knee from Pyle as TJ presses him to the cage looking for a single. Pyle backs out to the center. TJ slips on a head kick attempt. Pyle tries to capitalize without success. One two lands nicely for TJ. Right hand over the top from TJ, a left right behind it, then a leg kick. Thai plum and knee from Pyle, then a sweep puts TJ on his back. Pyle on top in half guard. Pyle moves to side mount. Shoulder strikes and knees to the body from Pyle. TJ gets to his feet and presses Pyle to the cage. Knee from Pyle in the clinch. TJ trying to get him down. Knee from Pyle, again. Thai plum and knee from Pyle, again, body shot exchange. Pyle reverses a takedown attempt and puts TJ on his back before the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 for Pyle.

Round 2 – Front kick attempt from Pyle. Same from Waldburger. Leg kick Pyle. Front kick. Head kick from TJ blocked. Left hook TJ, then a big leg kick. Right hand, big leg kick from TJ. Left hand. Pyle catches a kick and dumps TJ. TJ goes for a leg lock but Pyle is free and on top in half guard. Pyle moves to side mount. Knee on belly, looks to mount but TJ adjusts to butterfly guard and then gets to his feet. Knee from Pyle. Nice right counter from Pyle. Jab from TJ. Uppercut counter from Pyle. Spinning back kick from Pyle. TJ’s nose bleeding. Left hook from TJ. Tie up, dirty boxing. TJ presses him to the cage. Standing kimura from Pyle forces him to let go. Dirty boxing against the cage, TJ drops levels, Pyle defends and gets the takedown. TJ right back up looking for the double leg. Underhooks from Pyle stop it. They square back up. Right hand over the top from TJ. Body kick from TJ. PMN sees the round 10-9 for Pyle.

Round 3 – Left hand, leg kick from TJ. Leg kick Pyle, but TJ lands a nice counter punch combo. Nice left hook from TJ, leg kick. Pyle lands a counter right. Big right hand follows. Leg kick Pyle. Counter punch scores for TJ. Overhand right from Pyle backs TJ up. Again. Jab from TJ. Pyle catches a kick, spinning elbow lands in the back of TJ’s head, knocks him to the canvas. He gets back up and they tie up against the cage. That was a clean spinning elbow from Pyle. Thai plum and knee from Pyle, two big elbows. TJ walks into a big knee and Pyle jumps on a guillotine. TJ survives but Pyle mounts and lands a couple big elbows and punches. TJ gives up his back and is eating big shots. Rogan is calling for Herb Dean to stop it. Finally after a few more elbows and he does stop it.

170 lbs: Rory MacDonald vs. Demian Maia

Round 1 – Left from Maia, he shoots. Sprawl from Rory. Maia shoots again for a single and gets Rory on his back. Maia inside half guard. Now Rory with butterfly guard from his back. Maia gets to half and then full mount. Maia landing some ground and pound now as Rory tries to hang on. Rory bucking up but eating shots. Rory tries to roll but Maia heavy on top in half guard now. Rory with butterfly guard. Maia postures up and Rory springs to his feet. Head kick from Rory blocked mostly. Nice leg kick from Maia buckles the leg. High kick from Rory but Maia wobbles him with a big punch combo. Left hook Rory. PMN scores the round 10-9 Maia.

Round 2 – Nice left from Maia, shoots, stuffed. Front kick Rory. Right hand scores for Maia. Rory wobbles him. Maia shoots, stuffed. Again. Uppercut from Rory followed by a left and a front kick. Maia shoots, stuffed. Big body kick from Rory hurts Maia. Body kick Maia. Lazy shot from Maia, stuffed. He’s slowed considerably and looks uneasy on his feet. Big one two from Rory. Jab from Rory, again. Maia dives into a knee. Back up. Eats a right hook. Left jab. Rory teeing off. Right from Maia. Big inside leg kick buckles Maia. Big leg kick from Rory. Jab. Body kick from Rory. Maia catches the next one but can’t capitalize. Maia’s face bloodied up. One, one two from Rory. Big body kick. PMN scores it 10-9 for MacDonald … maybe 10-8.

Round 3 – Right from Rory. One two. Left from Maia, shoots, stuffed. Body kick from Rory, again. Right hook. Big right, left jab, jab from Rory. Maia shoots, stuffed. One two body kick, followed by a couple more jabs from Rory. Maia shoots again, grabs a single against the cage, Maia picks him up for the slam. The crowd cheers. Maia trying to pass guard with 2:30 left. Rory using butterfly guard. Rory is able to get it back to the feet. Maia shoots, stuffed. Right left from Rory. Maia shoots, stuffed. Maia looking desperate. As he should. Front kick from Rory. Maia swinging. Maia shoots, stuffed. Left from Maia. Left from Rory. One two from Rory. Maia winging shots but they’re coming slow. Big right from Rory. Maia still trying to make something happen but Rory tees off with a few seconds left, landing several punches. Both guys raise their hands at the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 for MacDonald and the fight 29-28 for MacDonald.

205 lbs: Daniel Cormier vs. Patrick Cummins

Round 1 – Big leg kick from Cummins. Jab. Nice left from Cummins, back kick. Clinch, uppercuts from Cormier, another one. Inside leg kick, left hand from Cummins. Cormier fires back. Cummins shoots, stuffed. Cormier lands a counter right. Cummins goes down and Cormier jumps on him with big right hands until the referee stops it. Cormier did what he should do against a 4-0 fighter who talked his way into a fight against one of the real top contenders in the UFC.

135 lbs title: Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Sara McMann

Round 1 – Can the queen of mean do it again? McMann looks nervous. Wouldn’t even look at Ronda. Sara lands a couple rights. Ronda lands a knee in the clinch. Sara lands a couple more rights. Ronda clinches up again. Knee from Sara. Ronda with an elbow. It’s a dog fight, not a cat fight. Ronda tries to get her down but no dice. Ronda with an elbow, a couple left knees, then Ronda lands another big knee to the liver and McMann falls down to her knees holding her mid-section. Ronda follows up with punches and referee Herb Dean stops it. McMann said it was her fault and should have got back to her feet quicker.
