UFC 166 LIVE results and play-by-play

UFC_166_posterUFC 166: VELASQUEZ VS. DOS SANTOS III takes place this evening at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and is headlined with a heavyweight title bout between champion Cain Velasquez and rival Junior Dos Santos. This will be the third time the two have met, each having won one bout.

UFC 166 play-by-play:

Dustin Pague vs. Kyoji Horiguchi

Round 1 – Leg kick from Horiguchi. Inside this time. Dancing around the outside. They trade punch attempts, Pague with the takedown and locks up a body triangle from the back. Horiguchi stands up. Pague looking for the choke, back against the fence while Horiguchi is standing. Horiguchi using two hands to control Pague’s left hand preventing the choke. Horiguchi eventually escapes. Right hand from Pague as Horiguchi lunges in. Horiguchi shoots, stuffed, eats a knee. Horiguchi lands a right on the break. Pague with a nice throw takedown. Scramble and Horiguchi ends up on top and lands a right before the bell. PMN sees it 10-9 for Horiguchi.

Round 2 – Leg kick, left hand from Horiguchi. He drops Pague with a big left hook. Horiguchi stacks him with big punches. Herb Dean right on top of the action. Pague locks up a leg and puts Horiguchi on his back. Pague inside his full guard. Horiguchi gets to his feet and pushes Pague against the cage, gives him some knees to the thighs then scores a trip takedown on Page. Horiguchi on top in half guard and landing short right hands to the face. Hammerfist from Horiguchi. Pague tries to sweep. Horiguchi stacks him with big right hands to the face. Now a big left hand scores. More punches from Horiguchi. Pague just covering up now. That’s it, Herb Dean stops it. Big win for Horiguchi in his UFC debut.

Jeremy Larsen vs. Andre Fili

Round 1 – Fili scores early with a combo. Larsen pushes him to the cage but eats some big knees and is cut open and bleeding from his forehead. Fili swarming with more knees and punches. Clinched against the cage, Larsen turns Fili to the cage, drops levels and looking for the double leg. Big body shot from Fili. Fili escapes and time is called as the ref gets the doctor to check Larsen’s cut. We’re good to go. Couple of nice rights from Larsen and a jab. Right hand and stiff jab from Fili. Fili ties him up against the cage. Larsen backs out. Leg kick from Fili, Larsen catches it and scores the takedown, now on top inside Fili’s full guard. Fili looking for an omoplata. Larsen escapes and trying to work the ground and pound, lands a right. Fili sweeps, stands up. They square up. Fili pressing. Big left counter from Fili, leg kick. Jab from Fili. PMN sees it 10-9 Fili.

Round 2 – Leg kick from Fili. He eats a big right from Larsen after countering some punches. Nice jab from Larsen. Left hook, but he eats a left then a huge right hand from Fili that hurts him. Larsen crumples and Fili finishes him off with punches as Larsen turtles up. Great UFC debut from Andre Fili.

Tony Ferguson vs. Mike Rio

Round 1 – Left jab from Rio. Big leg kick from Ferguson. Rio shoots, catches Ferguson with a big left hook. Rio continues with the shot, stuffed. He presses Ferguson to the cage, clinch, Ferguson pushes him off and lands a right. , left. Rio’s nose bleeding, he shoots, stuffed. Knee to the shoulder from Ferguson. He stands up, they square up. Big left hook from Ferguson rocks Rio. Rio shoots. Ferguson locks on a D’arce and Rio taps out. Big win in Ferguson’s comeback fight after a long layoff due to a broken arm.

TJ Waldburger vs. Adlan Amagov

Round 1 – Leg kick from Waldburger. Side kick to the knee from Amagov, front kick. Leg kick from Waldburger. Leg kick from Waldburger again. Amagov goes over the head with a spin kick. Left hook from Waldburger, he shoots, stuffed. Beautiful spinning back kick to the gut from Amagov. Leg kick from Waldburger, he shoots, stuffed. Tied up against the cage, he presses Amagov to the fence and drops levels for a single. Turns the corner but Amagov defends well. Amagov gives him some hard left hands and Waldburger goes down. Amagov, while in the clinch, drops Waldburger with a flash KO, the ref does not step in and Amagov lands several more big shots on the chin until Waldburger goes unconscious. Referee Yves Lavigne a little slow to respond there.

George Sotiropoulos vs. KJ Noons

Round 1 – George circling on the outside. Boos from the crowd. Left body jab from KJ. Not a bit of offense from George yet. Body jab from KJ again. Again. Again. Again. Right counter punch from Sotropoulos. Right to the body from Noons. Crowd getting restless. Right to the body from Noons again. Right counter from Sotiropoulos. George flashing a left jab. He blocks a big left hook. Right to the body from KJ and he takes an eye poke. Time out is called with under a minute to go in the round. KJ said he’s seeing some black in his eye but he can fight. Uppercut from KJ. George circling. KJ tags him, and they throw down in the pocket with KJ getting the better of it. PMN has it 10-9 Noons.

Round 2 – Left from George. High kick, blocked. Left jab counter from George. Right hook from George. Body jab KJ. George shoots, stuffed. Body shot from KJ. Right to the body follows. Leg kick from George, eats an overhand right. George shoots, and gets KJ on his butt against the cage. KJ gets back to his feet and they square up in the center. Hook to the body from George, left hook to the face from KJ. Big leg kick, jab from George. They trade jabs. Nice left to the body from George. Leg kick from George. Uppercut attempt from KJ, eats a left hook from George. PMN sees it 10-9 for Sotiropoulos.

Round 3 – Left from KJ. George shoots, stuffed. Nice right from George. Leg kick from George. KJ is using no kicks or takedowns, just boxing. Big grazing right from KJ. KJ tags George with a big counter right that wobbles George. KJ stays patient and doesn’t follow up. George’s face a bloody mess. George shoots, stuffed. Right counter from KJ scores. Leg kick from George. Spinning kick from George lands but nothing on it. Leg kick. Right counter from KJ. Nice uppercut counter from KJ. Left counter from George, leg kick follows. Right to the body from KJ. George landing several big leg kicks, then a head kick lands solid. KJ ducks the next head kick attempt and counters with a nice right. Big counter right from KJ, now a left. Close round but PMN sees it 10-9 for Sotiropoulos and the fight 29-28 for Sotiropoulos

Sarah Kaufman vs. Jessica Eye

Round 1 – Leg kick Kaufman, right from Eye. Left from Kaufman. Clinch, knee from Kaufman. Kaufman’s thighs looking extra beefy and powerful for this fight. Couple uppercuts from Eye. Leg kick from Eye. Leg kick Eye. Quick left jab from Eye. They trade in the pocket, Eye presses her to the cage. Clinch and knee from Kaufman, some nice dirty boxing too. Leg kick inside from Eye. Clinch and punch exchange, both scoring. Eye presses her to the cage. Nice left from Eye on the break. Right hand. Clinch battle, they get some distance. Leg kick from Kaufman. Body kick from Eye. Leg kick inside from Kaufman. PMN sees it 10-9 Kaufman

Round 2 – Right from Eye. Kaufman snaps her head back with a counter. Right hand from Kaufman, clinch, break. Jab from Eye. Leg kick Kaufman. Right hand. Big counter right, left hand from Kaufman. Nice exchange follows. Fast pace. Jab from Eye. Right, right from Kaufman, then a leg kick inside. Clinch, couple nice rights from Eye. Kaufman’s left eye swelling up from Eye’s left jab continuously finding a home. Kaufman with a couple nice right hands over the top, Eye presses her to the cage, foot stomps. Round 3 – Right counter from Kaufman wobbles Eye for a moment as she staggers backward. Kaufman presses her to the cage. Eye backs out to the center. Big leg kick, right hand combo from Eye. Nice right from Kaufman. Big right from Kaufman, clinch, lands another right. Leg kick from Eye. Nice exchange. Leg kick Kaufman. Half the round down. Kaufman clinches up, lands a knee to the body, presses Eye to the cage. Trade knees. Elbow from Kaufman, right from Eye. Jab from Eye. Big right counter from Kaufman knocks Eye backward, she follows up with a nice combo and Eye appears rocked. Eye clinches up and presses Kaufman to the cage. One minute to go. Dirty boxing from Kaufman, knees from Eye. Eye backs out of the clinch. Kaufman lands three big rights in the clinch. Eye wobbles. Big right from Eye. Nice jab from Eye. Nate Marquardt vs. Hector Lombard

Round 1 – Front kick from Marquardt. Again. High kick follows. Lombard chasing Marquardt, seems a bit frustrated. Leg kick Marquardt. Nice right from Marquardt, Thai plum, eats a couple punches in the clinch from Lombard. Right hand over the top from Lombard hurts Marquardt. He follows up with a big left under the arm as Marquardt retreats, this drops him and Lombard lands a few huge hammerfist punches and Marquardt goes unconscious. Scary Hector Lombard.

Tim Boetsch vs. C.B. Dollaway

Round 1 – Leg kick from Boetsch. Right to the body from Dollaway. Overhand right from Boetsch, catches a leg kick, kicks the back leg and dumps Dollaway. He gets right up. Left jab, big right from Dollaway. Big leg kick Dollaway, again. Big leg kick again, caught by Boetsch. Thai plum and knee to the body from Boetsch, but eats a left right from Dollaway. Nice left hook from Dollaway. Boetsch shoots, gets the takedown, but Dollaway gets right up. Leg kick from Boetsch. Head kick from Dollaway goes a little high, skims the top of Boetsch’s head. Leg kick from Boetsch. Nice left hook from Boetsch. Dollaway throws his hands up, lands a right as Boetsch comes in. Body kick from Dollaway. Thai plum, leg kick, big left hook, right hand. Dollaway’s hands looking good. Using a nice jab. Clinch, uppercut, right hook from Boetsch. Leg kick Dollaway. Boetsch with a leg kick. Clinch, dirty boxing. PMN sees it 10-9 Dollaway.

Round 2 – Boetsch shows a front kick to the face, just misses. Dollaway gets a single leg and puts Boetsch on his back, now inside his full guard. Moves to half guard. Boetsch gets to his knees. Dollaway spins to his back. Boetsch gets up, attacks with a knee but Dollaway goes for the takedown, back up. He shoots again. Boetsch looks for a guillotine. Dollaway safe, looking for a leg, lets it go. Boetsch on top as CB turtles. Knee to the ribs. Back to the feet. Uppercut in the clinch from Dollaway. Dog fight here. Boetsch presses him to the cage. Elbow from Dollaway, he retreats to the center. They square up. 90 seconds to go. Nice right from Boetsch. Dollaway smiles and taunts him. He ducks under a punch and gets a big slam takedown. Boetsch looking for a kimura from the bottom. Dollaway in side mount though. Dollaway with elbows to the body as time runs out. PMN sees it 10-9 Dollaway.

Round 3 – Leg kick Boetsch. Leg kick from Dollaway and Boetsch takes a hard inadvertent poke in the eye. Time is called. He’s bleeding from the eye that was poked. The doctor comes in to check it out. He says he can see and can continue. Jab from CB. He shoots, stuffed. Boetsch looks motivated. Clinch, CB retreats. Leg kick CB. Boetsch takes another poke in the eye… the other one this time. Time is called yet again. Boetsch is pissed. Ref takes a point from CB. Left  right from Boetsch, he attacks hard. Dollaway fires back, shoots and Boetsch jumps on a guillotine. Dollaway slips his head out and is now on top. Boetsch fights to escape but Dollaway puts him back down in half guard. CB gets to full mount, dropping elbows. Boetsch sweeps to his feet, foot stomp in the clinch against the cage. Knee from CB. They square up. Leg kick Boetsch. Right hook from Dollaway. Right from CB. Overhand right from Boetsch. He comes in looking for the kill but CB tags him with a couple big rights, clinch, takedown from CB, Boetsch grabs his neck for the choke, CB scrambles out. 10 seconds to go and Beotsch has CB’s neck looking for the finish. The crowd boos when CB raises his hands. Then cheer when Boetsch raises his. Due to the point taken from CB, PMN scores the round 9-9.

John Dodson vs. Darrell Montague

Round 1 – Leg kick Montague. Again. Dodson returns same. Jab from Montague. Right hand from Dodson connects solid after faking a left. Crowd getting restless. Montague with a leg kick. Nice left to the neck from Dodson. Trade leg kicks. Dodson drops Montague with a huge left hand. Montague fights to his feet but Dodson hurts him again with more big punches. Montague shoots for the takedown. Stuffed, but he’s back up. Dodson hurts him again with punches. Nice left from Montague. Leg kick. He seems okay now. Wow. Left, right hook from Montague. Nice couple lefts from the clinch from Dodson. Nice left from Dodson on the chin drops Montague face first to the canvas and this fight is over. Amazing power from Dodson!! That’s big power for a 125-er and it comes from his speed. He celebrates with son crazy acrobatic flips.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shawn Jordan

Round 1 – Leg kick from Gonzaga. Nice right from Gabe. Right to the body, right to the chin. Big leg kick inside from Gabe. Right left from Jordan but he gets countered with a big right hook and goes down. Gabe finishes him off with punches and Jordan goes out. Do not EVER sleep on Gabe Gonzaga. EVER. He’s one of the longest tenured heavyweights still competing at a high level in the UFC.

Gilbert Melendez vs. Diego Sanchez

Round 1 – Leg kick from Gil. Head kick attempt and Diego takes him down after catching it. Diego takes his back, goes for a choke. Gil escapes and fires off with body shots. Leg kick from Gil. Right to body from Gil. Leg kick Diego. Right from Diego. Leg kick Gil. Melendez stalking. Diego shoots. Gil stuffs it and gives him a knee to the face. Right hook from Gil scores. Leg kick, uppercut from Gil as Diego shoots. Body shot from Gil. Uppercut from Gil, big right hook catches Diego. Big right to the chin from Gil as Diego throws a body kick that is caught. Diego is cut and bleeding. Diego shoots, stuffed, right from Gil on the break. Body shot from Gil, right counter from Diego. Body kick from Diego. Big left from Diego seems to stun Gil for a moment. They unload in the pocket with big punches and Gil drops Diego but he’s quickly back up. Gil swarms him but time is up. PMN sees it 10-9 for Gil.

Round 2 – Right from Gil. Right from Diego during a big exchange. Body shots from Diego, Gil with a knee on the break. Diego with a huge cut over his left eye. Doc checks it out and he’s fine. Left from Gil. Body kick from Gil. Big punch exchange, both stand firm. Right from Gil. Diego fires back. Diego goes down after slipping on a kick. Back up. Right from Gil. Big body kick from Diego. Right from Gil. Big punch combo from Gil. Diego with a takedown, Gil gets right up and fires off a leg kick, one two combo. Right hook from Diego. He comes back swinging but Gil counters him with a combo. Diego shoots, stuffed, big knee from Gil on the break. Diego walks into a one two. PMN sees it 10-9 Gil. Great fight.

Round 3 – Diego with a left. Gil with a one two. Big exchange, both score. Diego walks into a one two. Diego just keeps coming forward, eating shots and firing back. This is amazing. Diego is all heart. Gil with a big one two on the chin. Diego is bleeding profusely, calling Gil to come on and bring it on. Ref calls time to check Diego’s cut. They let it go. Body kick from Diego. Leg kick. Crowd chanting Diego. Right hook from Gil. Big exchange and Diego tells him to come on. Diego lands a big right, a big uppercut and it drops Gil. He jumps on Gil’s back looking for the choke. Gil sweeps him and Diego looks for the guillotine. Gil escapes. Diego gets up, eats a knee. Diego lands a body kick. OMG this is crazy. Gil stops a spin kick and gets a body lock takedown from the back. Diego hits the switch for a takedown, back up. Body kick Diego. Again. With 10 seconds left they slug it out like nuts. Joe Rogan just said that was the new greatest fight he’s ever seen in his life. I think I have to agree. Holy sh*t this crowd is going nuts. PMN sees the round 10-9 for Diego, but the fight 29-28 for Gilbert. AMAZING AMAZING FIGHT!

Daniel Cormier vs. Roy Nelson

Round 1 – Hold on to your hats. Left hook from Roy. Big single leg takedown from Cormier. Nelson trying to get up, eats an uppercut. Cormier working the ground and pound from top. Roy gives up his back, gets to his feet, but Cormier hanging on him and muscles him back down. Roy back on his feet, takes a knee. Cormier drops levels for a single. Roy looking for a standing kimura. Cormier escapes, clinch wrestling now against the cage. Dirty boxing against the cage, big knee to the body from Cormier, another one appears to be low and time is called. Touch gloves. Body kick Cormier. Jab from Cormier. Left hook, then a big right from Nelson misses as he head hunts. Big combo from Cormier. Roy head hunts again. Cormier fires off a combo and Roy throws a big hook as Cormier ducks. Roy has POWER!  PMN has it 10-9 for Cormier.

Round 2 – Cormier flashing a jab. Leg kick. Fakes a shot, lands a left. Front kick to the belly. Body shot from Roy. Right hand. Big punch combo, then a shot from Cormier, presses Roy to the cage. Knee to the body, big one two, shoots for the single. Gets Roy down but he’s right back up. Big one two from Cormier, he presses Roy to the cage. Roy grabs his neck. Cormier gets out of that, leans on Roy against the cage, dirty boxing. Body shot. Roy breathing very hard. Knee from Cormier. Roy breaks free to the center. Big right left from Cormier. Body shot. Jab jab from Cormier. Right hand. Big leg kick. Leg kick from Roy. Left hook, right from Cormier, front kick. High kick. PMN sees it 10-9 Cormier.

Round 3 – Roy’s corner tells him he needs a KO. Two leg kicks and a high kick from Cormier. He circles the outside. Nice right from Cormier. Jab jab from Cormier, right hand, left hook. Big leg kick. Inside leg kick. He’s too quick for Roy. Spinning back kick and fist to follow. Front kick to the face from Cormier, inside leg kick. Left hook, right hand from Cormier. Inside leg kick, big body kick. Roy still stalking. Front kick, head kick, body kick from Cormier. Jab, jab from Cormier. Roy still trying to find an opening. Nice right hand, then a takedown from Cormier but Roy rolls right back to his feet. Front kick to the gut from Cormier. Leg kick, high kick. Roy sticks out his chin to taunt him with under a minute to go. Double jabs from Cormier, right hand., clinch, body shots from Roy. Cormier walking him down, big right hand. Leg kick from Roy as he chases him back. He did what he had to do. PMN has it 10-9 and 30-27 for Cormier.

Cain Velasquez (c) vs Junior Dos Santos – for heavyweight title

Round 1 – Cain takes a left hook and is staggered. He shoots, gets a takedown, goes for a guillotine as JDS gets up. Big uppercut from JDS. Big right from Cain, he shoots, presses him to the cage. Knee to the body from JDS as Cain gives him some rights. JDS escapes. Left right from JDS, Cain presses him to the cage, right hands. Big knee to the body from Cain but JDS fires back, head kick. Left hook as Cain shoots, looking for the takedown against the cage. Knees to the thighs from Cain. He muscles JDS to the ground, full mount, now half guard. Elbow from his back from JDS. Cain postures up with elbows of his own. JDS gives up his back. Now to his feet. Knee to body from Cain, he drops levels for a single. JDS stops it. Cain pressing him to the cage. Dirty boxing from Cain. Under a minute to go. They trade knees. JDS gets space and goes for a spin kick that misses. PMN sees it 10-9 for Cain Velasquez.

Round 2 – Cain with a left hook and a knee, leg kick, goes for a single. Gets him down but JDS right up. Cain pressing. Drops levels, stuffed. Cain pressing him to the cage. Knees to the thighs. Cain backs up with a couple big punch combos. JDS bobs and weaves. Couple lefts from Cain as he presses him to the cage, knee to the body. Trip takedown by JDS, Cain gets right up and Cain is all over him with punches, presses him to the cage. Cain is like a pitbull… relentless. Right hand from JDS as they get some space between them. Again, to the back of the head. Cain presses him back to the cage. Left hook from Cain. Big right from JDS stuns Cain before the bell.

Round 3 – Right hand from JDS catches him behind the head. Cain shoots for the single. Lets it go, dirty boxing, presses JDS to the cage, repeat. Knees to the thighs from Cain. Dirty boxing. Uppercut. Elbow from JDS, Cain drops levels. Stuffed. Cain leaning on him against the cage. JDS got some distance now. Right hand from JDS. Cain fires back, shoots, presses him to the cage. Crowd boos. Big jab from Cain. Cain catches a kick but can’t get JDS down. He pushes him to the cage, crowd boos. JDS lands a nice shot. Cain drops him and tries to finish. JDS back up but falls down. Cain swarms him, ref almost stops it. JDS back up. Cain keeping a measured pace on him against the cage as we near the one minute mark. I don’t know how JDS is still in this. Left hand from Cain. Dirty boxing, uppercut, left right, right from Cain snaps JDS’s head. They trade big shots. PMN sees it 10-9 for Cain.

JDS goes for a choke, they fall to the ground, JDS hits the canvas face first, is stunned and Cain finishes him off. Strange ending but Cain won this fight.
