mike_pyleThe injury bug strikes again:

A welterweight fight that many fans were interested in has been scrapped due to the injury bug. Thiago Alves was set to take on Matt Brown on the August 17 event, but has had to withdraw from the event and will now be replaced by Mike Pyle.

Pyle (25-8-1) is coming off a razor thin split decision win over Rick Story at UFC 160 while quietly winning four consecutive fights. In fact, he’s only suffered one loss since January 2010, a TKO loss at the hands of top contender Rory MacDonald.

Brown (17-11) has rattled off five consecutive wins while finishing four of those opponents. He was last seen disposing Jordan Mein at the UFC on FOX 7 event in April.

Both fighters love to bring the fight to one their opponents, so Pyle is an excellent replacement for Alves.

Alves hasn’t fought since a submission loss to Martin Kampmann in April 2012. The former title contender has been hampered with injuries over the past year and alternating wins and losses since getting worked by Georges St. Pierre in their title fight at UFC 100 in 2009.

The UFC on FOX Sports 1 event will be headlined by the light heavyweight fight between former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and former title contender Chael Sonnen.
