UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt (9-7) (4-1 UFC) is one huge knockout away from fighting for the UFC heavyweight title.

UFC President Dana White told a group of reporters following the UFC 158 press conference that took place earlier today in Canada, that Hunt would “likely” earn a title shot if he knocked out former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 160.

“It’s crazy to say…..but if he knocks Junior dos Santos out, how is this guy not next in line?” White asked.

Dos Santos was set to take on Alistair Overeem in a grudge match that was originally supposed to take place at UFC 146 before Overeem was pulled from the bout due to a failed drug test. Dos Santos then defended his heavyweight title against Frank Mir before losing the strap in a rematch with Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 in December.

After losing the title, the dos Santos/Overeem fight was booked to take place at UFC 160, but Overeem withdrew from the bout citing an injury. Hunt has been tabbed to replace Overeem and take on dos Santos in a battle of heavy handed strikers with great chins.

Hunt is coming off a highlight reel knockout over Stefan Struve in his last outing at the UFC on FUEL TV 8 event which took place on March 2 in Japan. It was the fourth consecutive win or Hunt in the UFC, stopping three of those opponents via TKO/KO. Hunt has won two “Knockout of the Night” bonus checks in those four bouts.

Hunt is set to take on Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 which will take place on May 25 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
