There’s a lot going on this week around the world of MMA. Let’s take a look at a few things you need to check out.
Pat Barry and his PYT Rose Namajunas drop it like it’s hot in the middle of a blizzard. Yes, I’ve watched this at least three times.
Stephan Bonnar finally came out of hiding after failing his drug test at UFC 153 back in October 2012. He told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s MMA Hour:
“Believe it or not, there are some therapeutic uses to some of the banned substances. Bottom line, I wanted to get my strength back. I was very weak. My body didn’t feel good, my joints didn’t feel good. That was my goal. … I’m not a stupid person. Of course, I know I’m going to get tested. I got three weeks to train for the fight, and 35 pounds to lose, and you really think after that I’m going to take something that’s detectable for a month? That makes no sense. Absolutely none.”
Everyone loves double knockout videos. Here’s a new one from an amateur MMA event featuring Brandon Alexander and Aaron Britt at Galaxy Fight Night IV in Yuba City, Calif.
This video is gaining a lot of attention with almost 100,000 views in one day. Nick Diaz works out on the speed bag for 23 straight minutes as he gets ready for Georges St-Pierre this weekend at UFC 158. If you can count the total number of punches Diaz throws in this video you win a free Pro MMA Now T-Shirt. Seriously. Count them. I dare you.
Check out this MTV UK documentary about the rise of 24-year-old Irish MMA fighter Conor McGregor (12-2) as he prepares to make his UFC debut in Sweden in April when he takes on Marcus Brimage at featherweight. McGregor has won titles in the Cage Warriors promotion in the lightweight and featherweight divisions.
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is scheduled to return to action at UFC 161 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. According to a report from GracieMag.com, Shogun has enlisted the help of famed boxing coach Freddie Roach to help him prepare for “Lil Nog” who is known for his boxing. Roach commented on Shogun’s learning curve:
“He didn’t know how to transfer his weight too well, and he wasn’t a very big puncher at first. Once we got him pivoting and punching off the right foot, keeping his boxing stance, he punched really, really hard when he did it correctly. … I don’t think he was ever taught how to do it correctly.”
Roach also mentioned that Shogun is having a problem with his knee — even though Shogun’s camp has denied this.
Ryan Bader is out of his bout with Glover Teixeira at UFC 160 due to a knee injury. Australia’s James Te Huna, who is currently riding a four-fight win streak, will now face Teixeira.
Did you see Doug “The Rhino” Marshall accidentally kick his cornerman in the face during warm-ups at Bellator 92 last week? Fortunately, his cornerman has a good beard. Ouch!
TMZ has obtained the following pre-op photo of transgender MMA fighter Fallon Fox. According to the report, Fallon was born Boyd Burton and went by the name “Woody”. An ex-girlfriend tells TMZ Woody was a “manly man” who served in the Navy and she never suspected he’d undergo a sex change.
Here’s the edited version of the now classic UFC 158 conference call with Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre. The full version is about 45 minutes. This version, just has Nick and GSP talking and has been edited down to 16 minutes.
