anthony pettisWell, that didn’t take long. UFC lightweight contender sent a text to UFC President Dana White after Jose Aldo retained his UFC featherweight title via unanimous decision against Frankie Edgar at UFC. He communicated via text that he wanted to fight Jose Aldo. Here we are three days later and the fight is on according to a report from MMAJunkie:

Two of the most dynamic strikers in all of mixed martial arts will meet Aug. 3 as Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) is dropping from lightweight to 145 pounds to challenge current champion Jose Aldo (22-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) for the UFC featherweight title.

The name of the event and the venue are not known at this time, but sites in Texas, Chicago, Las Vegas and Brazil are potential places the fight could take place.

Pettis was expected to receive a title shot against the winner of the upcoming Ben Henderson vs. Gilbert Melendez which will take place  in April at the UFC on FOX 7 event. However, the allure of another potential ‘superfight’ is what brought this to fruition for Pettis.

“Aldo is a tremendous fighter,” Pettis said. “I have all the respect in the world for his skills. I just want to be one of the best in the world, and the only way to do that is to beat the best.”

It was thought that UFC featherweight Ricardo Lamas was next in line to face Aldo after destroying Erick Koch at the UFC on FOX 6 event. Koch was set to met Aldo for a shot at the title last year but the bout never came to fruition due to injuries. Lamas has won four consecutive fights, including the last three against top 10 featherweight competition.
