dana white-post138UFC President Dana White did an extensive interview with the “UFC Tonight” show that airs on FUEL TV. He was asked about the next opponent for UFC middleweight Anderson Silva and if Chris Weidman was a real option. His response is below:

I think that fight is closer and more possible than people think. I actually thought that Weidman was going to be out a lot longer than he was because of his injury. Ya know, he’s healed up pretty well and is claiming that he’ll be ready to start training again in a couple of months. We’re looking at a couple of different options right now, some options that we like…and Weidman is one of them.

Weidman has used his Twitter account to voice his opinion on the matter. He basically has stated that he wants to fight Anderson Silva on July 4th weekend, and then when he beats Silva will give him an immediate rematch in November. That July time frame seems to fit in with White saying Weidman can start training again in a couple of months.

I’m speculating here, but the other two options for Silva are probably Rashad Evans and Hector Lombard. Evans fights this Saturday at UFC 156 against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. There have been rumblings about him making the drop to the middleweight division, and he has said he would do so for a major fight. It doesn’t get any major than a fight with Anderson Silva. Hector Lombard will be fighting former number one contender Yushin Okami on March 3. He’s the former Bellator middleweight champion and a win over Okami would be back-to-back wins in the UFC. He’s an exciting fighter and would be an intriguing matchup for Silva as well.
