In my continuing search for the most effective and best tasting supplements out there, I recently received some products from San Nutrition to review,RAW FUSION protein and Fierce Domination pre-workout formula.  This review will focus on the RAW FUSION protein, and in a subsequent review, I’ll speak about my experiences with Fierce Domination.  In my annual trips to the Arnold Sports Festival, I have run into San Nutrition at the sports expo,  and was happy I got the chance to sample some of their products.

As someone who loves meat and all meat related foods, I wasn’t necessarily excited to see the words “Vegan Approved” on the RAW FUSION samples.  My limited experience with vegan products has been that they mostly tasted like garbage, if they had any taste at all.  Fortunately, this was not the case with RAW FUSION.  The samples I received were the “Vanilla bean” flavor.  When I opened the package, I noticed the powder HAD a pleasant vanilla aroma similar to other protein powders that I have had a positive experience with.

The label advertises the following attributes:

–          100% bio-fermented plant protein matrix

–          Gluten free

–          Non-Dairy

–          Non-GMO

–          Non-Animal

–          Hypo-Allergenic

–          Mimics the amino acid profile of milk protein

–          Incredible taste

–          Easy digestion

From SANN.net:

For those who want to be at the top of their game… Each scoop of RAW FUSION™ contains 21 grams of a custom bio-fermented, allergen, GMO and animal free plant protein fusion designed for the maximum assimilation and absorption in the human body.

It comes from pea protein isolate, brown rice sprouted and artichoke protein concentrate swirled in the delicious omega fatty acid rich sunflower oil matrix! The RAW FUSION™ benefits get even better…

The RAW FUSION™ amino acid profile contains over 4,900 mg of BCAA’s (Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine) per 1 scoop and mimics that of whey/milk and is rich in Glutamine.

The RAW FUSION™ patent pending formulation by SAN is free of solvents, radiation, artificial colors, sweeteners or anything created synthetically.

I first tried the RAW FUSION in my morning post-workout shake.  I used one serving of RAW FUSION, one cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, ¼ cup oats, ½ cup frozen strawberries and about a teaspoon of cinnamon.  Throw that in a blender and I’m good to go.  I was able to detect the vanilla taste of rawfusion, in a good way and while I did notice a slight protein aftertaste, I was pleased with how the powder blended into the rest of my shake.

I also tried the powder mixed only with water in a blender cup, and mixed only with unsweetened vanilla almond milk.  I was not as pleased with the taste in either of these situations.  The vanilla flavor seemed to disappear after the first drink – this was somewhat remedied by giving the mixture a thorough shake in between drinks.  The powder did not dissolve quite as easily as other protein powders I’ve dealt with, but it did not get stuck in clumps.

In my experience with various protein powders, one of the top things I rate the powder on the is the taste when mixed with only water or almond milk because when I have needed to use a protein shake as a meal replacement, or in between meals, I am often looking for something I can mix quickly that will still taste great.  The rawfusion did not deliver as much in the taste or mixability areas as I was hoping for.  However, to be fair, this is only my second experience with a purely plant-based protein, and it is my first experience beyond just a drink or two of a plant-based protein.  While the taste of it does not compare to some of my staple protein brands, I imagine that the taste would have to be significantly better than some other plant-based protein.  RAW FUSION would be a great option for those looking for a plant-based protein, or a gluten-free protein.

On a side note, I thought it was a good idea, and an original one, that San listed the Amino Acid profile per serving, including Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAS); this was informative and, in fact, the first time I have seen this listed on a protein product.
