Bellator has released former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, opening the door for the 28 year old to take his services onto the open market. According to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, the 90-day matching period that generally follows a contract’s expiration has been waived, which will allow Alvarez to immediately seek a fight with another organization.

Early speculation is that the UFC will make an attempt at signing the Blackzillians standout, and, given the monster contract the organization extended to fellow Bellator veteran Hector Lombard, it’s likely that Alvarez could find himself on the receiving end of a very lucrative deal.

Bellator will retain the right to match any offers Alvarez may receive from competing promotions, and Rebney has indicated that he feels comfortable letting Alvarez shop his services right away. “There’s no reason to hold [Eddie] to a series of months of not having the opportunity to look at those offers,” said Rebney.

Over the course of his nearly ten year career, Alvarez established himself as one of the world’s best lightweights with notable wins over Shinya Aoki, Joachim Hansen, Roger Huerta, and Josh Neer. And, at only 28 years of age, he stands poised to garner a sizable sum of money from any promotion that reaches out to him.
