Legacy Fighting Championship 14 takes place this evening at Houston Arena Theatre in Houston, Texas. The main event features Houston’s own Jeff Rexroad (5-1) taking on Brazil’s Lucas Pimenta (8-1) for Legacy’s interim welterweight title.

Rexroad, a Legacy FC veteran, has won his last four bouts in a row, while Pimenta, a Bellator veteran, has won his last eight fights.

In the co-main event we’ve got Chuck Liddell sidekick and WEC/UFC veteran Antonio Banuelos (20-8) taking on the up-and-coming Josh Sampo (8-2) of Missouri in a 135-pound match-up. Also fighting on the card, a lot of eyes will be on Matt “Danger” Schnell (0-0), star of MTV’s MMA reality show “Caged”, who will be taking on 23-year-old Texan Ryan Hollis (0-0). Both Schnell and Hollis are making their pro debuts.

125 lbs: Matt Schnell vs. Ryan Hollis

Round 1 – All eyes are on Schnell here as he makes his pro debut against Hollis who is also fighting his first pro bout. He catches a low kick and dumps Hollis on his back, lets him up. Inside thigh kick, outside leg kick. Misses the next try. Hollis lands a right and a side kick, then a low kick. Another leg kick from Hollis, again. High kick blocked. Danger throws a one two three but Hollis gets out of the way, lands a leg kick. Right left from Schnell, he scores a gain. Short right from Hollis. Schnell shoots, gets a single leg takedown, on top in half guard. Tries to pass but not enough time before the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Schnell.

Round 2 – They trade leg kicks. Leg kick from Schnell. High kick, blocked. Leg kick from Hollis. Outside leg kick from Schnell. Counter right hand. Inside leg kick from Schnell. Nice high side kick to the face from Hollis. Big big slam from Schnell. Hollis trying to set something up but Schnell moves to side control. Hollis recovers guard. Nice elbow from off his back by Hollis. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Schnell.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Hollis has an enormous reach. Nice kick to the back leg of Hollis that drops him. Schnell follows him to the ground inside guard. Hollis gets wrist control and is landing several punches off his back. He locks Schnell up in an inverted triangle while he’s looking for an arm triangle. Schnell escapes but remains inside his guard. Elbow from Schnell. Hollis lands elbows off his back. Schnell staying busy with ground and pound. Hollis looking for the triangle, staying very busy. Elbows from Schnell. Hollis goes for an armbar right before the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Schnell. — However, it was very close, especially rounds two and three. Pat Miletich gave round two to Hollis. Schnell seems very confident he won.

Hollis is was the hometown guy here so it was good to see the judges keeping it legit.

125 lbs: Josh Sampo vs. Antonio Banuelos

Round 1 – Inside thigh kick from Sampo. Nice right from Sampo after a brief head butt. Front kick from Sampo. Left from Banuelos. Knee to the jaw from Sampo, just clips him. They trade punches. Nice right from Sampo, then a leg kick inside. They trade rights. High kick from Sampo. Banuelos scores with a right. Leg kick from Sampo followed by some punches. Banuelos shoots, big slam. Sampo looking for a kimura immediately. Banuelos gets free. Sampo gets to his feet but gets taken right back down. He gets up immediately. Inside leg kick from Sampo, then outside. Right from Sampo and a high knee. Front kick Sampo, right from Banuelos. Leg kick Sampo. Nice left from Banuelos. Sampo gets a relatively easy takedown, now on top in half guard with only seconds left. Sampo gets full mount before the bell. Wow. Banuelos has his hands full folks. PMN scores it 10-9 for Sampo.

Round 2 – Banuelos’ cornerman was wearing a Condom Depot shirt. That’s awesome. Haven’t seen them around in a while. One two from Sampo. Samp right in his face. Inside thigh kick from Sampo goes high and lands in the groin area. Banuelos given time to recover. Knee to the body from Sampo, inside thigh kick. One two. Left hook. Banuelos can’t figure this guy out. Jab from Banuelos. Leg kick from Sampo. Sampo shoots, stuffed, high knee from Sampo. Nice right from Banuelos. Jab from Banuelos. Leg kick Sampo. Jab from Sampo. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Sampo. Banuelos very well may have underestimated Sampo or possibly just had a bad gameplan and couldn’t adjust. This is Banuelos’ first fight at 125 pounds since his wrestling days.

170 lbs: Jeff Rexroad vs. Lucas Pimenta (Interim Title)

Round 1 – Touch gloves. Big inside leg kick from Pimenta knocks Rexroad off balance. Pimenta checks a leg kick from Rexroad, lands an outside leg kick of his own. Left hook from Rexroad. Body shot from Pimenta. Pimenta clips Rexroad with a couple big punches, he’s stunned, they clinch up against the cage as Pimenta presses on him. Body shots from Rexroad. Ref separates them. Big left from Pimenta on the chin, then a right. Pimenta presses him to the cage. Rexroad complains about an eye poke and the ref calls in the doctor. Big leg kick from Pimenta. Big right hook from Pimenta followed by a huge takedown, lands in side control. Pimenta postures up with big ground and pound. Rexroad fights back to his feet. Pimenta all over him with punches and Rexroad turns into a zombie stumbling around. Pimenta puts him back on the ground with a takedown. Pimenta inside full guard of a bloody Rexroad. Rexroad tries to fight back from the bottom. Bell sounds. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Pimenta.

Round 2 – Pimenta checks a leg kick. Pimenta just seems too fast for him. Right from Pimenta, he shoots, presses Rexroad to the cage. Rexroad came in with his chin straight up in the air and got hit for it. Knee from Rexroad to the body, lands a punch and eats one or two too. Ref separates them after re-clinching. Pimenta gets the takedown. Rexroad with rubberguard, lands a couple elbows. Rexroad looks like he’s thinking about a gogoplata, throws up the other leg for a triangle very quickly and Pimenta taps out pretty darn quick. It looked like a modified triangle like he was also using his arm to choke him  — I was right.

Pimenta said he uses “Eddie Bravo” style mission control, then slide your arm underneath and use your arm or their arm to choke. Said he doesn’t really have a name for the choke. This is even more impressive considering Pimenta is a BJJ black belt. Will like fight for the real title next.
