UFC 148 LIVE results and play-by-play

LAS VEGAS — It’s Tiiiiiimmmmmeeee! The moment you’ve all been waiting for… five rounds of middleweight championship action between the champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva and “The American Gangster” Chael Sonnen. It all goes down tonight at UFC 148 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

UFC 148 will also mark the final fight for the newly-inducted UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz as he faces fellow former light heavyweight champion, the original Ultimate Fighter, Forrest Griffin, for a tie-breaking third time.

Rafaello Oliveira vs. Yoislandy Izquierdo

Round 1 – Here we go folks. Big night. High kick from Tractor, leg kick from Izquierdo. Left hand from Izquierdo, bod kick. Oliveira with the takedown and is on top in butterfly guard, tries to pass to side, Izquierdo gets full guard. Oliveira moves to side control. Puts knees into his side from the top. Oliveira looking to make something happen, lands a couple punches. Knee to belly briefly as Izquierdo squirms and twists. More knees to the ribs from Oliveira. He looks to lock up an arm, lets it go. Hammerfists from Oliveira, looks for an Americana. Izquierdo very busy trying to get free, he finally pushes Oliveira off after Oliveira got mount briefly. Izquierdo gets up, eats a head kick. Oliveira shoots. They go down, roll, back up. Hard straight left from Izquierdo before the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Oliveira (could have easily gone to Izquierdo though).

Round 2 – Leg kick Oliveira. Straight left from Izquierdo. Leg kick Oliveira but he eats a left counter, eats another one and he falls after throwing a head kick. Oliveira blocks a left, shoots and puts Izquierdo on his back, inside full guard. Oliveira lands a few punches as he moves to side control. Oliveira bleeding from his forehead a bit. Izquierdo tries to lock up a reverse triangle. Oliveira back in side control softening Izquierdo up with punches. Izquierdo lands several elbows from off his back. Ref stands them up to look at the cut. Doc checks Oliveira out and lets it go. They put Oliveira back on top in side control. Oliveira controlling the action from top control. Oliveira looks for an Americana but Izquierdo pulls out. Oliveira lands several more punches and looks for a crucifix. He finishes the round on top. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Oliveira. His corner tells him the first round could go either way but the second round is his. Izquierdo’s corner tells him it’s 1-1.

Round 3 – Touch gloves. Head kick from Oliveira. Lazy leg kick. Leg kick Izquierdo. He lands a left and a knee but gets put on his back by Oliveira, now inside full guard. Body shots from Oliveira. Oliveira working the ground and pound. He passes to side control. Oliveira with some elbows and looks to lock up an Americana. Izquierdo escapes and gets up but Oliveira immediately shoots and puts him on his back. Moves to side control. Oliveira gets a crucifix and lands a few shots but Izquierdo gets free. Oliveira still has side control and is landing punches. Oliveira still attempting an armlock but Izquierdo survives, although definitely losing the round and thus the fight as I see it. PMN scores the round 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Oliveira.

Shane Roller vs. John Alessio

Round 1 – Leg kick body jab from Roller. Leg kick again from Roller. Left hook from Alessio. Overhand right and a left hook from Roller connects and backs Alessio up. Left hand from Alessio. Low kick catches Alessio in the groin and time is called. Touch gloves. Double jab, overhand right from Alessio. Roller dodges a couple jabs, lands a left hook. Roller shoots, Alessio shrugs it off. Left jab from Alessio. Right from Roller over the top. Left hook from Alessio as they clinch up against the cage. Alessio grabs a single leg. Roller defends, Alessio now with underhooks as they struggle against the cage. Body shots from Alessio, a knee to the body. He backs out. Alessio counters with a couple punches. Uppercut from Roller, but he gets dropped with a shot from Alessio, Alessio lays on top in side control before the bell. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Alessio.

Round 3 – Alessio lands an uppercut that rocks Roller and he follows up with a combo, backing Roller up. Roller with a one two, shoots. Alessio goes for a guillotine as Roller puts him on his back. Roller on top in half guard. Roller drops a few elbows to the head and body. Alessio gets to his feet. Roller drops levels for a takedown attempt, gets a bod lock and throws Alessio down, takes his back with one hook in. Roller with both hooks in now, lands some punches and looks for the choke. Alessio asked Roller if he wanted to ride him. Roller with a body lock. Alessio  gets a reversal 10 seconds before the bell ends the round on top throwing bombs. Constantinos Philippou vs. Riki Fukuda

Round 1 – Leg kick from Fukuda. Again. Riki shoots for a single quickly and gets Philippou to one knee against the cage. Philippou defending from going all the way down, gets back to his feet, clinched against the cage. Philippou pushes Fukuda back and they square up. Leg kick from Fukuda. Right hand from Philippou. Again, on the chin. Philippou lands a couple more, then a head kick. Inside leg kick from Fukuda, outside now. Again. Close round; PMN scores it 10-9 Philippou.

Round 2 – Philippou looks for a single but Fukuda shrugs it off. They square up and Fukuda eats a couple. Fukuda lands a leg kick, he shoots, drives Philippou to the cage, clinch. Knees to the thigh, dirty boxing from both. Right jab from Philippou. Inside leg kick from Fukuda. Outside leg kick. The doctor comes in to check him out but he can’t even open his eye. Phillipou recovers and they let it go. Touch gloves. Philippou is angry and attacks. He takes a kick apparently to the groin. But he screams and keeps attacking and lands some nice punches. They clinch up briefly as Fukuda shoots in. They trade punches. Right hook from Fukuda. Philippou lands a right before the bell. Gleison Tibau vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

Round 1 – Tibau stalking. Khabib shoots, pushes Tibau to the cage. Tibau backs out. Knee from Tibau. Khabib pressing him to the cage. Knees from Tibau. Ref separates. Khabib with a jumping kick, he eats a couple punches. Khabib shoots for a leg. PMN scores the round 10-9 Tibau.

Round 2 – Left hand from Tibau. Khabib shoots, grabs a leg. Tibau breaks out. Left hand from Tibau. Tibau gets him down, tries to take his back, lands a knee and a right hand that staggers Khabib. Right hand from Melvin as Camoes grabs a single and puts Melvin down, he bounces right up though. Melvin shrugs off a shot. Camoes shoots and Melvin puts him down, lays on top inside full guard. Camoes puts him on his back now, they scramble and Camoes gets full mount. He starts dropping elbows and punches. Camoes looks for a choke but Melvin gets to his feet. Camoes tries a spinning kick, loses his balance and Melvin pounces on top. PMN scores it 10-9 Camoes.

Round 2 – Left hand from Camoes. Spinning kick lands from Camoes, shoots, they roll back to their feet, clinched against the cage. Camoes shoots and Melvin pulls out. Left hook and a right from Camoes. Camoes with a body lock, double underhooks, gets the takedown. Elbow from Melvin as Camoes holds him down against the cage. Melvin gets up. Spinning elbow from Camoes but Melvin drags him down, holds him from behind. Melvin lands a big right and elbow and takes top position. PMN scores the round 10-9 for Melvin.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Demian Maia

Round 1 – Maia shoots, elbows from Kim. Maia gets one hook in from the back, now tries to drag Kim down. Gets him down, mounts him, lands a couple shots and Kim gives up, obviously injured and the ref stops it.

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen

Round 1 – No glove touch. Anderson looks very relaxed. Chael shoots and puts him on his back once again immediately, walked right through Silva’s punch attempt. Chael is inside is full guard with the ground and pound, just like before. Chael in half guard as Anderson holds on to him trying to stifle the attack. Chael trying to get out of half guard. Chael boxing his ears. Chael not doing a ton of damage but is staying busy. Nice body shots from Chael. Chael gets full mount. Chael giving him some shoulder strike payback. Anderson just holds on. PMN scores the round 10-8 for Chael.

Round 2 – Chael ties him up against the cage. Anderson looking for a leg. Knees from Chael. Chael drops levels. Anderson defends. Knee from Chael right hand from Anderson. Chael walks through his punches, ties him up. Chael falls on a spinning backfist. Anderson throws a knee to the downed opponent and finishes him off with punches..
