TUF alum Cody McKenzie

A new fight has been added to the UFC 148 card, Chad Mendes (11-1) will take on Cody McKenzie (13-2) in a featherweight matchup set to take place on Independence Day weekend.

The fight was announced by UFC officials who confirmed that verbal agreements have been made for the bout which will be McKenzie’s UFC debut at featherweight.

UFC 148 will take place on July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be headlined by the highly anticipated middleweight title fight between current champ Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. The main card will air on PPV and the prelims are expected to air on FX and Facebook.

Chad Mendes will make his first appearance in the octagon since losing to featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 142 earlier this year in Brazil. The loss to Aldo was Chad’s first ever career defeat, before the loss he had won 11 straight fights beating the likes of Erik Koch, Cub Swanson, Rani Yahya and many more. Mendes will now look to bounce back from the loss and climbing the ladder to earn himself another title shot.

Cody Mckenzie enters this fight coming off a big victory over UFC newcomer Marcus LeVesseur at UFC on Fuel TV 3. He won the fight via submission in the first round using one of his favourite techniques, the guillotine choke. This victory saved Cody from potentially losing his job after having lost two consecutive fights against Yves Edwards and Vagner Rocha in 2011. McKenzie will now make the drop down to featherweight where he will hope to continue his success and notch up another win.
