Jon Jones(left) will face Dan Henderson on September 1st

UFC President Dana White told the media at the UFC on FOX 3 pre-fight press conference that September 1st was the planned date for Jon Jones to defend his light heavyweight championship against number one contender Dan Henderson. Dana White confirmed the September 1st matchup via Twitter late Wednesday night.

The light heavyweight championship fight will be the headlining bout for UFC 151 with the event expected to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The venue isn’t known at this time.

UFC originally aimed for a July 21st date for Jones and Henderson’s bout which would have headlined the UFC 149 card. However, Jones elected to take a longer (well deserved) break from fighting after his successful title defense against Rashad Evans at UFC 145. In the 14 months that lead up to UFC 145, Jones was the busiest man in MMA, defeating Ryan Bader, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Lyoto Machida.

When Jones takes to the cage September 1st he will have had a four and a half month layoff between fights, where as Henderson will be fighting for the first time in almost a year. Henderson’s last fight was a win over Shogun Rua at UFC 139.
