“Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey” play-by-play:

7:06 – That’s right, boys and girls… Mike Menninger, live and – as Mauro Ranallo put it last night at the weigh-ins – in living color (???) from Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH, bringing you the best g***amn live blog you’ll read all night… probably.

7:08 – Sorry, Jack.  If you’re reading this, by now you know I’m abandoning your template format to dust off my timestamp modus operandi.  In your face!

7:10 – Furby’s pissed because his seat isn’t as good as mine.  Just like last year.  In fact, he just called me from his seat… he looks adorably small waaaay up there!

7:16 – A few observations… I know I’m unimportant, but do people have to be THAT skeptical that I’m media? … Strikeforce needs to put some friggin’ banners outside this arena.  Last night, they were begging people to buy tickets, there are people tallying into the 6-figures in Columbus walking right damn past this place.  And outside the arena?  Not one advertisement for the event.  Guess no reason to pump money into a brand that will soon perish… Been here 20 minutes already, and I’ve heard Jimi Hendrix (awesome), but no Drowning Pool (not awesome)… Finally, if the Tate-Rousey fight is as good as those ladies looked last night, we’re all in for a treat.  Especially me, because I’m sitting cageside and am going to get to meet them later tonight.  Boo yah!

7:19 – I’m going to get something to drink… for free… because I’m media, you know…

7:34 – Free food too.  Just sayin’…

7:36 – Pat Militech and Maura Ranallo in the house, clogging up pedestrian traffic.  How is it that Ranallo is such a massive hipster AND an MMA commentator?  Seems like a pretty odd combination.

7:39 – Furby still bitching about his seat.  I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this.  Seriously.

7:44 – Light checks seem to be going well.  The arena looks really good inside.  If only the curtain matched the carpet, or whatever.  Some… ANY… energy directed outside the arena would have been awesome.  This is a great card with a lot of hype.  If there’s no sell out tonight, Strikeforce has no one to blame but itself.  Or Furby.

7:50 – Furby headed back up to the Eagle’s Nest, as we’re going to call it.  Also, I just noticed that he’s getting credit as being the author of this live blog.  Time to totally mail this one in, I guess.

7:51 – Just a few minutes away from fight time, and the interwebs connectivity is spotty, at best.  Dark omen for the prospects of a successful live blog.  Tape-delayed blog, maybe?

7:53 – I know it’s old news now, but I’m still struggling with seeing UFC promos during Strikeforce events.

7:56 – True or false?  Affliction lost some its cachet once one could purchase its apparel at TJ Maxx.  Jack, sorry if I’m alienating potential sponsors.  I only blog what I see and/or entirely make up.

8:00 – Fashion update:  You’ll never see a Cesar Gracie guy look as dapper as Gil Melendez does right now.  My man-crush is as strong as ever.  Also, it’s cold as fu** in here… which presents a dilemma for all the hot (and, sadly, not so hot) chicks who want to show some flesh.  Keep those sweaters handy, ladies.

8:07 – Fights starting.  And no internet connection.  Neat.

(155) Ryan Couture vs. Conor Heun

8:10 – Fight announcements over.  Scott Coker still looks important.  Those are unrelated thoughts, by the way.

8:11 – Everyone loves the cage girls.  They always do.  It’s as predictable  as the sunrise.

Round 1 – Trade a couple jabs to start.  A leg kick from Couture.  Another.  Couture throwing the jab.  Cobmo from Heun lands, but not flush.  The fellas are circling.  Front kick from Couture.  It’s quiet in here, except for the douche who made the “body bag” joke.  A quick combo from Couture, who follows with a shot and presses Heun against the cage.  Heun turns it back.  Couture then turns Heun into the cage.  Some knees from Couture, as he presses Heun into the cage.  They separate, and back to the middle.  Leg kick by Heun well-checked by Couture.  Left hand from Couture lands.  Another leg kick from Couture.  1-2 and a kick from Couture.  Head kick from Heun misses badly.  Fans still cheering in an uneducated manner.  Anotyher right from Couture, who follows with a kick.  He gets taken down by Heun.  Couture tries to get a triangle as Heun picks him up.  Heun slams him down.  They scramble and stand.  Heun trips Couture, and Heun is on top, in half guard.  Huen moving to side control, looking for a guillotine.  Couture slips out and they stand.  1-2 from Couture.  Good body kick from Heun, who is bloody under his left eye.  Good right hand from Couture in the waning seconds.  Spinning back kick lands just before the horn.

8:17 – One fan wants to give that cage girl half his shit.  Awesome.

Round 2 – The guys miss a few punches to start the round.  Couture still using that front kick, but not a lot on it.  3rd Karate Kid reference now.  Awesome.  Head kick from Heun barely lands.  Good right hand from Couture.  Couture ducks under a left hook from Heun.  Heun shoots and gets Couture down with a single, but Couture right back up.  Nice combo from Heun.  Straight right and a kick from Heun.  Left hook from Heun,  Couture misses a big right and ends up on his back, courtesy Heun.  As they land, Couture looks to work a kimura.  Heun dropping some elbows into Couture’s side.  Couture in half guard, not letting go of the kimura.  Maybe gonna use it to stand up?  Couture lets the arm go.  Couture working for a triangle now, and Heun may have obliged.  Couture transitions to an armbar, but Heun postures up and sneaks out.  That was close!  Huen scrambles and has a guillotine.  Couture survives and presses Heun into the cage.  Couture drops Heun and spins to his back.  He has the hooks in, with an arm trapped.  Somehow Heun slips out and they stand.  Couture presses Heun into the cage, and Heun looks like he pulled guard, working a triangle.  Couture being cautious, maybe just wanting to survive the last 20 seconds or so.  A few soft punches from Heun as the round ends.

8:23 – Everyone is a comedian here.  Don’t people know I’m the only funny one here (in my own head)?

Round 3 – Heun in the center of the cage, as Couture circles.  Left hand from Heun.  They trade stiff jabs.  Front kick from Couture, but that distracts Heun, and Couture lands a good right.  Couture closes the distance and grabs Heun.  He’s able to drop him easily, as he falls into side control.  Couture working the left side Heun with hammerfists.  Couture working to get Huen’s back, but Heun defends well from his back.  Couture then sneaks into the mount.  Heun uses the cage to slide out, and they transition back into side control, with Couture on top.  More shots to the left side of Heun.  Those have to be taking their toll.  Couture scrambles and takes Heun’s back.  Some big shots from Couture on the top.  Heun covered up and looks beat.  Some more shots from the top, and the ref jumps in and stops the fight.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Ryan Couture defeats Conor Heun via TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) at 2:52 of the 3rd Round.

8:32 – A “get to know you” video package about Ronda Rousey plays on the big screen.  The piece is well done, actually.  I feel like I know more about Ronda.  Hooray for me!

8:33 – Moving right along.  Next fight coming up!

(155) Caros Fodor vs. Pat Healy

8:36 – The camera pans the crowd, and at least two people did the “#1” thing.  What does that even mean??

Round 1 – Fodor throws some serious heat to start the round, but doesn’t land much.  Healy grabs him and spins him into the cage.  The guys work for underhooks.  A few knees from Healy, but Fodor spins him into the cage.  They keep working for position.  Healy trying to control Fodor’s hands. And they separate.  Fodor lands a big left, and Healy is hurt.  He’s tough though.  A big combo from Fodor lands.  Healy was hit pretty good there.  Fodor presses him into the cage and is able to get the double leg pretty easily.  Healy in his back, and Fodor looks to pass guard.  Some elbows from Fodor from the top.  Fodor now in Healy’s half guard.  Now Fodor in side control.  Healy uses a sweep to stand up, and holds onto a leg of Fodor and drags him down.  Now Fodor on his back, in full guard.  Healy throwing some punches from the top, but none cleanly through.  Fodor looks for an arm, but quickly concedes that position.  Still in full guard, as Healy continues to throw that left hand.  Healy stands, and Fodor has a holf of his left foot.  Healy back to the mat in Fodor’s guard.  More left hands from the top.  Nice rally from Healy, who may have stolen the round.

8:43 – We get it, guy…  the cage girls are hot.

Round 2 – A good right hand from Fodor to start the action here.  Healy throws a leg kick, but almost gets tripped for the trouble.  A combo from Healy misses.  Healy bleeding from his nose.  Fodor likes the left hook.  He checks a leg kick from Healy.  Healy shoots, but Fodor stuffs it easily and ends up with his back against the cage.  Some knees from Healy.  Healy drops for the double, but Fodor defends well.  Healy now working hard for a single leg, but Fodor has a solid underhook.  Good balance too.  Healy tries again for the double and misses.  Almost had the single, but Fodor used the cage well to stay up.  Healy drags Fodor down, but Fodor still has control of Healy’s head.  Healy gets his head out and is now in Fodor’s half guard.  Fodor scrambles and stands.  Healy tries to take Fodor’s back, and as they spin, Fodor ends up on his back, holding Healy in half guard.  Healy transitions to side control and throws some elbows.  Fodor works back to half guard.  Boo birds coming out, because these Karate Kids fans love them some grappling and jits, right???  Healy looking to improve his position, but struggles.  He eventually works to side control.  He slides through into the mount and drops his chest on Fodor.  Fodor able to scramble back to half guard, where they end the round.

8:49 – “Half my shit” guy from before now wants the cage girl to have his abortion.  That’s right.  It just got straight weird up in here.

Round 3 – Good combo from Fodor.  Leg kick from Healy lands.  Straight right lands from Fodor.  A left hook lands from Fodor.  Healy shoots and grabs a single.  Fodor able to stay up.  Healy shifts to a double and lands it.  Fodor on the mat with his back against the cage.  Healy in Fodor’s half guard for a moment, before he transitions to mount.  Healy applies pressure with some elbows.  Healy looking to isolate Fodor’s left arm.  In so doing, Fodor is able to scramble back into half guard.  Some left hands from Healy, but not a lot of steam behind them.  Fodor looking for Healy’s left arm for a kimura, but he gives it up.  Some more left hands from the top from Healy.  Healy looking for an arm triangle, but Fodor senses it and keeps his arm up.  Healy rolls over, and Fodor grabs a leg, looking for a knee bar.  Healy slides his knee out and ends up on top.  He shifts to side control and grabs the arm triangle instantly.  He’s got it.  Fodor taps.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Pat Healy defeats Caros Fodor via submission (arm triangle) at 3:35 of the 3rd Round.

8:55 – Can these fights end sooner than the third round?  My insurance doesn’t cover MMA-related carpal tunnel.

8:55 (also) – Fodor limps his way out of the cage.  That knee bar must have been close.

(170) Roger Bowling vs. Brandon Saling

8:58 – Saling walks out to “Walk Hard”… the theme from that John C. Reilly comedy vehicle from a couple years ago.  Dewey something or other.  Interesting.

Round 1 – Bowling looks huge.  They touch gloves to start.  Big leg kick from Bowling.  And another.  Saling catches them though and almost drops Bowling on the second one.  Bowling misses a head kick, but lands a left hook.  A solid 1-2 from Bowling, who then shoots in.  Saling defends well. Another shot from Bowling, who rocks Saling.  Saling stands in and throws back and stuns Bowling with a left hand of his own.  They separate, and Bowling shoots in and gets a double.  Saling stands up quickly, and Bowling throws some vicious knees to the leg of Saling.  Bowling lads some big shots, but Saling drops Bowling with another right hand!  Bowling still alive somehow and stands back up.  He shoots in and gets Saling down.  Bowling tries to grab an arm for an arm bar, but Saling is out easily.  Saling lands some shots, and Bowling is still hurt.  Bowling looks gassed, but shoots in and gets Saling down again easily.  Bowling seems content to lay on top of Saling to catch his breath.  HE isolates an arm and lands some uncontested shots to Saling’s face.  Bowling in side control as he still is catching his breath, it seems.  A LOT of action so far in this one.  Bowling isolates Saling’s arm again and lands some big left hands to Saling’s unprotected face.  The ref is watching closely, but Saling assures him he’s OK.  More left hands from Bowling.  The crowd wants a finish!  Bowling looks to get full mount and does, but doesn’t have enough time to muster any offense before the horn sounds.

Round 2 – They touch gloves again to start the 2nd.  Bowling ducks under a left hook and shoots in for a double.  Now single.  And he gets it.  Bowling into side control.  He isolates the left arm of Saling and drops some right hands on Saling’s face.  He can’t defend himself, except to tuck his head in.  Bowling dropping shots.  The ref has no choice but to step in and end it.  Saling was game, but Bowling was just too much.  Great fight from both these guys.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Roger Bowling defeats Brandon Saling via TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes) at 1:15 of the 2nd Round.

9:12 – I have to pee.  All the free drinks you can handle isn’t all roses, gang.

9:13 – Bowling throws his hat into the crowd.  Then his shirt.  Any excuse to lose the shirt, huh Roger?

(135) Alexis Davis vs. Sarah Kaufman

Round 1 – The ladies trade punches right off the opening bell.  Davis with a couple leg kicks.  Both in tight with some punches.  Davis grabs Kaufman’s neck for a little dirty boxing.  They both trade, and Kaufman lads a stiff right that shudders Davis.  In the scramble, Kaufman pushes Davis into the cage.  Davis throwing some knees, and Kaufman throwing some punches.  Davis with the dirty boxing.  Davis is bloody though, and Kaufman keeps the pressure on.  Good combo from Kaufman.  Head kick from Davis nearly lands.  They clinch, and Kaufman presses Davis into the cage.  Some outside knees from Kaufman.  Knees to the body from Davis.  The ref stops the fight to have a doctor look at the cut over the left eye of Davis.  A fan asks why these guys are wearing shirts, no one laughs, and he insists it was funny.  Yeah.  Davis is OK, and the fight is back on.  Some really nice punches landing from both.  a 1-2 from Kaufman lands squarely.  Body kick from Davis.  Kaufman keeps finding that 1-2.  They clinch, and Kaufman presses Davis into the cage once again.  Davis seems comfortable with her back against the cage, as she throws knees.  They separate, and Kaufman throws some hooks as they do.  A big left from Kaufman, who now seems to be bleeding.  These ladies are standing toe-to-toe trading punches.  A head kick from Davis lands.  Both girls are a bloody mess.  This is a brawl.  Plain and simple.  Big ovation as the round ends.

Round 2 – Right back to throwing as the round begins.  Leg kick from Davis.  More trading as they stand right in front of each other.  1-1-2 from Kaufman.  Kaufman throws Davis away as she tries to clinch.  Davis looks for more dirty boxing, but eats a right hand.  Davis tries a spinning back kick but misses.  More gender jokes.  Leave the funny to the pros, am I right?  Clinch against the cage, with Kaufman keeping control.  Some knees from Davis land though.  Kaufman throwing some of her own.  Davis spins away from the cage, and they’re back to brawling.  Davis using her legs to keep Kaufman away, but to no avail.  Kaufman pressures with the jab and follows with the right.  More trading punches.  A head kick from Davis misses.  They clinch again, and Kaufman has Davis back against the cage.  Another fan is putting funny guy in his place with some digs of his own.  Nice.  More knees from the clinch.  The separate, and Kaufman lands an overhand right.  Kaufman’s jab is finding a him.  They clinch for a moment and separate again.  Leg kick from Davis.  They clinch once again, and Davis grabs a thai plum and looks to land a knee.  The round ends in the clinch.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Sarah Kaufman defeats Alexis Davis via Majority Decision (29-28×2, 29-29).

9:43 – Break time… aka Time to check in with Furby and listen to him bitch about his seat.

9:56 – The weird thing about being the “funny guy” at an event like this is that during most of any given fight, the crowd is quiet.  So we can all hear the terribly unfunny joke being offered.  Double edged sword, especially when you fall flat like gender-joke guy.

10:03 – Forrest Griffin in the house.  He’s a big dude.

(185) Bristol Marunde vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza

Round 1 – Jacare controls the center of the cage to start.  Jacare rushes in with some punches, but nothing lands.  The guys seem cautious so far.  Jacare punches his way into the clinch and lands a couple of knees.  They quickly separate.  A brief scramble, but no one lands anything.  Both guys circling, still careful.  The crowd is getting a bit restless.  Jacare is the bigger fighter. In a scramble, Jacare presses Marunde into the cage and quickly jumps onto his back.  He looks to get the hooks in, and Marunde tries to sneak out the back door, as Jacare is high on his hips.  Jacare gets Marunde to the mat and gets his hooks on.  Dangerous spot for Marunde, who realizes it.  Marunde controlling the right hand of Jacare, protecting his neck.  Jacare throws some punches, and the ref jumps in.  Apparently one or more got Marunde on the back of the head.  Warning to Jacare as the fight is stood up.  As they re-engage, Jacare lands a huge right hand that floors Marunde.  Jacare looks to jump on him and submit.  Marunde finds his wits, but Jacare still on control on top.  Jacare on Marunde’s back, throwing knees.  They stand, with Jacare still on Marunde’s back.  Marunde spins into Jacare and they clinch against the cage.

Round 3 – No touching gloves to start the third.  Quick shot and clinch by Jacare, who trips Marunde to the mat.  Jacare on top in half guard.  Jacare throws some rights and lefts to the face of Marunde.  Marunde trying to control Jacare’s upper body.  Some right hands from Jacare.  Marunde rolls into Jacare, but stops short of giving him his back.  Marunde trying to use the cage to stand, but falls and Jacare takes his back.  Jacare drags Marunde back to the mat, and looks to get his hooks in.  Marunde on his knees, and Jacare on Marunde’s back.  Can’t get his hooks in though.  Marunde spins into half guard.  As he does, he leaves his arm exposed and Jacare quickly sinks in the arm triangle.  Tap and we’re done.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Ronaldo Souza defeats Bristol Marunde via submission (arm triangle) at 2:43 of the 3rd Round.

(185) Lamumba Sayers vs. Scott Smith

10:38 – FYI, Smith looked terrible at weigh-ins.  It looked like he had a pretty rough weight cut.  Hope he’s feeling better tonight, though he looks a little softer than usual.

Round 1 – Touch gloves to start.  An overhand right from Sayers nearly lands.  Sayers throws a right and uses it to shoot in and drop Smith to the mat.  Sayers transitions quickly to Smith’s back and drops some punches to the side of Smith’s head.  Smith slides out and stands quickly.  Sayers with an uppercut.  Sayers drops down, picks Smith up, and suplexes him down.  Smith tries to hang onto Sayers’ neck, but Sayers slips out.  In the scramble, Sayers gets on top and slaps on a guillotine of his own.  Smith taps.  0-4 in his last 4.  The end of Scott Smith fighting for Zuffa?  Probably.

(171) Paul Daley vs. Kazuo Misaki

Round 2 – Circling to start.  Noons asking Thomson to hit him.  Thomson throws a left head kick and slips.  Noons chases him to the mat, but Thomson able to stand.  Thomson shoots in, looking for a double leg.  After pressing Noons against the cage, Thomson is able to drop him.  Noons slides his back to the cage, pressing down on Thomson’s head.  Same position as before, with little action.  Noons tries to escape, and Thomson tries to jump on his back.  Noons back down, back against the cage.  Thomson trying to pull Noons away from the fence, but Noons seems well able to stay put.  Thomson pushes, and now is in Noons full guard.  Thomson trying some shots to the midsection of Noons.  Some left hands are getting through as well.  Ref stands them up, oddly, as there is actually some offense.  As they re-engage, Noons throws some uppercuts that find a home.  Noons now that aggressor, and Thomson looks a little exhausted, hands lowered.  Thomson lands a right hand, and Noons is cut over his right eye and is bleeding.  They clinch, and Thomson somehow ends up on one knee.  Noons isn’t sure what’s going on, but there’s no stoppage.  Thomson stands, and they re-engage.  Thomson looks for a double leg and gets Noons down easily.  The crowd wants some action.  Some punches from Thomson, as Noons has his back against the cage… again.  Noons throwing his left hand, because, hell, Thomson isn’t doing much.  Plenty more boos for everyone. Hazzah!

Round 3 – Touch gloves to start the 3rd.  Noons looking to box, and lands a combo.  Thomson circling away.  Thomson with a shot, and Noons is down quickly. Thomson quickly grabs an arm triangle.  Noons surviving for now.  Thomson squeezing, but Noons is alive.  Noons rolls, and Thomson on his back.  Thomson looking to get his arm under Noons’ chin for the RNC.  Can’t get his hooks in though.  Noons rolls back into Thomson and full guard.  Now half guard.  Some elbows from Thomson.  Now some hammerfists.  Noons looks tired.  Honestly, so does Thomson.  Another solid hammerfist from Thomson.  A couple more.  Noons tries to shove Thomson off with his legs, but can’t.  Noons working his way to the cage.  Another elbow from Thomson.  Noons scramble to full guard.  Thomson postures up and throws some punches.  Noons scrambles to get his back against the cage.  Thomson has Noons legs tied up in his own, and Noons is unable to stand.  With 10 seconds to go, the boos are really flying.  The horn sounds, and neither fighter looks thrilled.  Still, hard fought by both guys.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Josh Thomson defeats K.J. Noons via Unanimous Decision (29-28×3).

11:50 – Having seen her earlier at the Arnold and just a minute ago again, I can unequivocally say that Chandella Powell is, in fact, hot.  Anyone that thinks otherwise is blind.  I’m on record.

11:52 – Also, just FYI, I want to watch this last fight.  So, I’ll do a brief recap at the end of every round, but I’m not going to a running play-by-play.  If you don’t like it, well, then pony up $14 and buy Showtime, cheap ass.

(135 Title) Miesha Tate (c) vs. Ronda Rousey

Round 1 – It involved some big punches from Tate, an armbar attempt from Rousey, a Judo toss, and some ground and pound.  Then Rousey got Tate’s arm… and damn near broke the f**king thing.  Wow.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Ronda Rousey defeats Miesha Tate via Submission (armbar) at 4:21 of the 1st Round.

Josh Thomson has been completely off the map as of late, having suffered significant leg injuries which have kept him sidelined for a significant portion of his recent Strikeforce career. He’s finally healed up and hoping to earn a trilogy fight with Gilbert Melendez if he can defeat Noons convincingly.
